Comments (20)Lesley, thank you so much. Patience is important, and definitely something I struggle with. It's hard to plant something and know it's going to be a few years before it really wows you! I planted two Henri Martins this last summer and a Salet Moss and I'm dying for them to bloom. They are the first "old" roses I've planted and I am just antsy to see them. I was impressed with how much they grew in their first year though from little bands. I have removed New Dawn from my wishlist on ARE! Thank you for letting me know. I definitely don't want a monster of a rose covered in thorns. -------- iris_gal, thank you very much! Yikes... Sounds like a lot of people have had trouble with New Dawn. HMF is bookmarked on my computer. :o) I'm on there way more than I should probably admit! I saw Mme. Plantier gets about 5 feet wide. I don't know that I mind the pruning too much since its vigorous, hardy to zone 3, and near thornless. I dunno? I'm conflicted. -------- Trish, it's good to know I'm not alone! I do feel like I've learned a ton but there is SO much to learn. It always amazes me the stuff everyone knows here. Well I bet in the right place it might not be such a terrible idea! If you had it somewhere where it could get as big as it wanted and you didn't have to pass by it too closely. I don't think a place like that in my yard exists. Hopefully Jeri will come back and tell us what that beautiful rose is. :o) Michaela...See MoreLooking for a good blueberry to add
Comments (5)If you're looking for something a little unusual, serviceberry (sometimes called Amelanchier) is uncannily similar to blueberry in size and taste, although it is actually more closely related to apple. I would also consider lingonberry if you like things more on the tart side. It is related to blueberry and cranberry, it is more like cranberry but more palatable. Edit: my mistake, these plants prefer zones 4-8, probably not the most suitable for where you live. Maybe grow some boysenberries....See Moreeasy and inexpensive way to add cover to door (portico/hanging porch)
Comments (15)Since you are in a HOA, drive around to locate the other houses that are the same model. Chances are good someone will have solved this problem already. You can use google streetview to "drive", too. Do you know how much coverage you need? 6 inches, 12 inches, more? A small overhang painted the same color as the house or in white matching the trim would be quite unobtrusive, but if it needs to be 18 or 24 inches or larger, then the HOA will probably take more notice when you put in your proposal for approval. BTW, inviting the HOA board members over when it rains may help your case. Or make a video next time it rains....See MoreLooking to add a portico, suggestions please
Comments (3)I happen to love simple ranch homes adding stone to a brick house is a bad idea I like the new front door and garage doors planned and IMO unless you are planning on a whole new facade I do not think porticos work on these homes. You could look a bit more MCM style garage door s and front door and of course the landscaping IMO that is what would enhance the look....See Moreshirlpp
