Dana - out here Dorcas isn't all that spotted but it's a great rose regardless. MUCH MUCH better than Freckles, which I eventually got rid of. Better disease resistance by far - right now it's one of the only roses I have w no BS. Blooms are mostly pink with a hint of yellow inside. Great rose. The striped roses I have aren't as disease resistant. Rockin Robin blooms a lot but it's got BS right now. Scentimental oddly enough is in better shape for some reason. Doesn't bloom as much though. Oranges n Lemons is great when it blooms but it's the stingiest bloomer I have and I may get rid of it. Pandemonium gets loaded with BS. I forgot the name of a couple but they also don't have much resistance. In your area I don't know how they'd do but I suspect not much better. I would suggest Smith's Parish but I doubt that it will survive in your climate - it's a Bermuda rose and even here, gets some dieback. I really like striped roses but most don't seem particularly disease resistant and I don't like to spray. Seems like a good thing for breeders to work on instead of more pink or yellow roses each year!

I brown the slices in my huge stock pot with the clad bottom.....then add some onion and water....and celery,carrots, tomato, rutabega herbs, spices, wine etc... When the meat begins to fall off the bone....after about 1n hour, I remove it from the pot, cool it a bit remove the meat and put back into the soup pot and simmer a half an hour or more. Then I add the "soft veggies" like green beans, peas, corn and okra and cook another 20 minutes or so.....check for seasonings and serve. Linda C

I doubt it's a Patens, just doesn't look like it to me. Would like to know, but doesn't really matter as I'll just see how they develop. Took some pix today of them repotted. Oops, sorry for the blur. Here's a closer up to show the ridges are part of their characteristics, not wrinkliness from thirst. I did check Hermine's book & confirmed their are a number of different types of S. cylindricas, many of them ridged. Thanks Barb abt explaining the Hawaiian research. BussyV, it was a good thought, but no, not thirsty. Matt, don't know if you know this, but Sans can have pups that look nothing like their parent which experience I once had w/a Patens, so I wouldn't necessarily ID it that that way, but thx anyway. ETA: Gosh Barb, your Patens' photos shows them to be just gorgeous! Thx for the eye candy.

This is a much deeper bumpout than yours and covers what may be a back porch, but just to give you some ideas about how to handle incorporating it better and making a substantial entry there. Gather ideas and accurate measurements; then take photos and inspiration pix to a good architect who can design a fitting look for your specific home. You could put a portico like this underneath the bumpout and add some softening curves with new steps,curved railings and landscaping. I would pay special attention to the concrete block retaining wall and stairs so they fit with the new portico/porch and look less utilitarian. Here's a classic treatment... Two ideas for adding a wide front porch that surrounds the bumpout or tucks up under it, depends on height underneath.
