Master bath major remodel

Greetings fellow Houzz designers:

Planning a major master bath remodel this summer. Pretty sure I will have a floating vanity (6 huge drawers) quartz top vanity nearly identical to photo below. Prefer 2 mirrors (over the double sinks) instead of full wall mirror.

I welcome your suggestions for wallpaper, (on vanity wall only) lighting sconces, vanity 7’ rug runner patterns, floor/ shower tiles, and your opinion of this floating vanity and freestanding tub in general.

Color scheme of marble, gray, white, and little teal (from adjoining master bedroom). FYI...bedroom carpet (not replacing) connects through short walkway (his and her separate closets) directly with tile at bathroom floor (pocket door opening). It’s is a medium beige tan cream color with same color “diamond cut pattern.” Should new bathroom “marble” gray and white tile floor incorporate beige/golds to blend with carpet or okay with just grays and white tile?

Floor tile placement pattern suggestions?

Is herringbone too busy? Use different tile patterns on floor? Planning faux marble non-slip porcelain floor tiles (unsure of tile size) throughout along with shower tiles —still undecided on two walls (accent shower shelf tile openings all up in the air). Should tiles extend upward on non shower walls throughout?

What is your experience with freestanding tubs? Any suggestions and pictures are welcome especially with the current gray and white marble bathroom color trends.

I’ve added my “2 cents” on various recent Houzz design kitchen question posts so reaching out for the first time to you all.

It’s entertaining and a nice distraction for a few minutes each day from our temporary quarantined existence. Sad 😔 but we will become stronger and kinder from all of this!!

Hi, I took a look at your bathroom idea book and here's my thoughts on some common elements.

You seem to like vertical sconces. I recommend a visit to a good lighting store once you have your floor plan finalized. I find lighting stores have excellent advice, often pick up on things to watch out for that I never would have thought of and will price match anything online.

The vast majority of your ideabook pictures have no contrast and I didn't see any wallpaper. What were you imagining for wall paper? A texture of a very subtle print?

I like the floating vanity a lot. I've never had a freestanding tub but love the idea of one. Will you use it a lot? A friend installed one and used it a few times and realized she liked the look of it better than the use of it. For her it became a expensive folly. Do you have a tankless water heater? If not, will your water heater support what is needed to fill the tub?

I wouldn't worry about incorporating beige into the bathroom. The carpet isn't permanent and may change some day and you really seem to like the overall grey bathrooms without beige.

I don't see that any of your ideabook phots have herringbone so not sure if that's what really strikes you. If you go with the overall marble look, i think herringbone is too busy.

Many thanks..most of my saved photos for bathroom remodel ideas are on Pinterest.

Wallpaper ideas are gray with white ...modern abstract art, white trees or blossoms, with sheen. I plan on using the freestanding tub about 5 times a week. Have a pretty big tub now and new hot water heater that can handle filling a large tub..not sure about the freestanding tub at 70x32 inch size.. Will research this. Thanks again for your feedback.

I used the shower for the first time last night, and am SO pleased! The shower door was dear but worth it -- no leakage, and it felt so spacious while in there. The Whisperwarm fan is wonderful -- stepping out of the shower into a cone of warm air was just luscious. In retrospect, the corner shelves could've been bigger, or I should've added another -- I like to keep lots of shampoo bottles around and now I'll have to choose ;). Towel warmer and heated floor worked wonderfully too -- can you tell I'm a heat-whore? As I've gotten older, I've become more and more addicted to warmth. Squeegeeing the shower took less than a minute, and it looks great! Only design decision still pending is whether to do a curtain over the window. Thoughts?

1. Put in a kneespace - I like that and it looks like it's doable given the layout. 2. Replace cultured marble with granite and 2 undermount sinks - Absolutely. 3. Not sure what to do about mirrors. - One large mirror. 4. Maybe replace the cabinets. - I would keep the cabs - they're nice. You can add some after-market slide-out containers under the sinks. 5. Tub - Keep it but add the same color tile as the flooring as a surround. 6. Shower - Doesn't look big enough for dual heads to me. Shower without a curb is a code no-no. If you want to remodel as handicapped, you may find yourself facing a lot of codes for the bathroom and total house that may add up to a big budget-buster.

With all due respect, it's time to retire that bathroom. Please don't waste your hard earned $ on doing it piece by piece. There's a lot to fix/update. I leave it alone until ready to do it right all at once. It is usually more economical to combine the whole remodel than spacing it out. Also get much better results. if you plan on selling ever, do the remodel approximately 5 years before. It will be a lesser offer sold as is. The only thing I do until then is paint. No to coutertops on those old cabinets & layout can be made better in future. I hope that makes sense to help you make the best decision for you.

@smalloldhouse_gw thank you for taking the time to look/read! We’re looking to remodel an existing area of the house into the master suite so we Have fixed dimensions to work with. The other option is how the bed currently is which is against the left wall on the picture. This does provide a little more walking space around the bed and we may well keep it there in the future. The window on that wall partially overlaps the bed frame which isn’t the best look. Also- if we switched to a queen size bed instead of a king that would obviously allow more space but we like the king size bed. Another thing is that the window the bed is against is really the second floor at that point in the house- the way dips down to go into the garage underneath. So it’s not like anyone could walk by outside our window or anything. Currently all exterior items are remaining the same - no changes to exterior doors/windows at this time.

Just a thought, you might get more responses if you narrow the post down to one or two items for feedback. You will likely get what you need, it will just take several postings. It's an exciting remodel and I really like the direction.
