Comments (17)It honestly shouldn't surprise anyone that a vigorous understock can increase the disease resistance of a rose (or any other plant). It's well known that animals' (Humans, included) immune systems are located in their guts. Their digestive tracts. The root system of a plant IS its digestive tract. That is what absorbs the majority of its nutrients. Some are absorbed through the foliage and canes but the roots (remember FEEDER roots?) search and retrieve the resources which enable the plant to survive. If those roots are not vigorous, or strong, or are unsuited to the climate/soil/water in which the plant grows, it won't be good and likely not very successful. Put good roots under it and watch it grow. Remember all the older roses which were considered "good" until only available own root? Should any of this honestly surprise any of us?...See More'Eugene de Beauharnais'
Comments (8)Bourbon roses don't love me *quite* as much as I love them, but they do well here over all. And Someday I intend to have EdB/LeGC, if I can ever find it in stock! lol. As an aside, two of my favorite roses are blooming now, both of which I have because of your photos, Jeri. Grandmothers Hat is right beside Pulich Children, and the contrast is stunning (I hate that word, but...). Thanks for the enabling, Jeri. You're as priceless as the roses you show us ;) John...See More'Eugene de Beauharnais'
Comments (18)portlandmysteryrose - AWW... what a nice thing to say. I chock it up to ghosts of my DH's ancestors - one of them actually planted the EdB in the picture I posted above, although I have 2 others that I rooted from it that don't get rust either. I just wanted to point out that EdB is not necessarily weak on its own roots - it just sounds as if the rootstock makes it easier for it to thrive in Jeri's condition. Kim - you are correct - we are theoretically in a horrible, awful, drought here this year, but we have gotten over 20 inches of rain since Oct 1 of 2021. Comments (12)Paul, we had it long ago, but when we stopped spraying, it turned into the most awful bucket of rust I've ever seen in my LIFE. For YOU, it was blackspot. But Kim gifted me with a plant he'd budded to Fortuniana, and the difference is beyond extraordinary. This plant is taller than the old one ever got to be, and the foliage is consistently clean enough to eat off of. It just shows, I guess, that some roses are never going to be what they can be, unless they're budded....See Morerideauroselad OkanaganBC6a
