Comments (27)Wow this is a swoon worthy rose, the color is so rich and the bloom so full and pretty, it’s absolutely sumptuous and decadent at the same time. I think I’m in love :-) How is the fragrance? And how do you think it would grow in hot and humid SE TX?...See More'Eugene de Beauharnais'
Comments (18)I know I am ignorant completely of competitive "rose shows", and I guess I am naive in thinking that those who judge such have some knowledge of old roses, if old roses are allowed in the show. Is this common to have such ignorant people doing the judging? Anyone who knows anything about old roses knows that many have variable colors - that is pretty fundamental. Also that some old roses are both chinas AND something else, as "hybrid china" implies that in the words. Is this sort of nonsense still going on? I always assumed that rose show judges were required to have some sort of minimum education/knowledge of different classes of roses. Now, one could look up a rose, say on HMF, if some ignoramus tried to disqualify it erroneously. Do they allow that? The more I hear about competitive "rose shows", the more I am glad that my fundamental personality is NOT competitive in any way (one of my old bosses told me once "You are certainly territorial, but not at all competitive." He was right, in all areas of life. Jackie...See More'Eugene de Beauharnais' ?("Le Grande Capitaine"?)?
Comments (11)I have several EdB bushes in my garden - the oldest one left over from the ancestors, the others rooted cuttings of it. Here is the latest one I potted up. It is on its own roots, and to my astonishment is over 5 feet tall (or it would be, except the doe who visits our garden has pulled it over. It was planted inside of a deer cage, but has outgrown that. No idea why this one got taller than the others (most of them top out at 3 feet). Jackie...See MoreHouzz. At It Again. Comments (8)I think this is one of those old roses (1838!) whose color varies depending on the climate, soil, specific weather, etc. I took some pics of blooms on mine (I have three separate plants, but two of them are rooted cuttings of the old one, so they are all the same clone. Anyway, here are 2 pictures I took yesterday. Some of the blooms are way more red than the pictures above, but others are pinker. I found similar colored photos on HMF of this rose, so I think the variations are natural. My reddish blooms right now have a lot of very much darker outside petals, almost trending towards black. I so love roses hybridized before "stable color" was a goal of the hybridizers! Jackie...See Moreportlandmysteryrose
