Gritty vs 5:1:1 outdoor containers in zone 5

Hello everyone. I'm working on a container garden for attracting hummingbirds. All perennials in zone 5a where I live, and almost all in containers. I'm wondering if the freezing climate would have any ill effect when using mixes that leave the roots so exposed? The general rule of thumb with outdoor containers in cold zones is usually to knock off 1 zone for hardiness due to the "extra" root exposure (zone 4 plant becomes zone 5). Would these coarser mixes exacerbate that at all?
