Removing or painting over metallic paint

I used the Ralph Lauren metallic paint on my bathroom ceiling and it is attracting mildew.! My house was built in the early 50's and we have no fan in the bathroom only a window.. I need to get this off my ceiling. Does anyone know if this paint is oil, latex, water or acrylic based? Any ideas on how to get it off? I don't just want to paint over it for fear of it still attracting mildew. Worst decision I've ever made!

I would figure out how to get a fan installed in there, if your paint is attracting mildew. If you cant get a ceiling fan installed, look into getting a through the wall fan installed. Other than that, the only thing you can do is prime well, with a very good quality oil based primer, and then repaint the ceiling with a mildew resistant bathroom type paint. I have a fan, and also have silver metallic paint in one bathroom. (Martha Stewart brand), and have no problems at all with mildew. Before you paint, or do anything though, use a good cleaner with bleach in it to clean off that mildew. Fumes could be strong, so have good ventilation.

No paint “attracts mildew”. That’s an environmental issue regardless of the covering. Fix the actual problem, which is your bath ventilation. That mildew will not be alone. It has friends you just haven’t found yet.

I used the boiling method as well as non-toxic paint stripped and steel wool. The 1942 heat grates/vents came out nice. Primed them and painted them. Look great. Only issue is that my vents are at a slight angle pointing toward the ceiling (top of vent is 1.5" and bottom is 2.5"). Before the grates would stay closed because of the friction in hinge on the backside ... but not they are " floppy" and swing back/forth. When the heat is on, the forced air pushes them closed. Any idea on how to increase the friction in the simple hinge? I thought about bending the metal sides ... but it would ruin the new paint job and the old metal is very sturdy. Sanding would be ideal, but they're making nice improvements with bonding primers. You might try Ace Royal Sealing Primer, Ben Moore Fresh Start Superior Primer, Zinsser Bullseye 123 or Cover Stain, Sherwin Williams Adhesion, or Glidden Gripper (I believe all of the above say they'll adhere to glossy surfaces and oil or latex, but always double check the label before using a product). Paintergirl is right about the peeling of latex on heavily used items, though. I painted my bathroom vanity 7 months ago, and what started as a tiny chip on a shelf is trying to peel away into a bigger spot (I'll be going sanding & over it again with Ace Cabinet & Trim Paint, which is hard like oil but cleans up easily like latex). If your son is going to use that locker as hard as we did the ones in school, I'd definitely consider a protective top coat like poly (regardless of whether you use latex or spraypaint). Oh, and latex paint takes up to a month to fully cure, so if you go that route, you'll want to let it cure for a while (ideally a month, but a week would help) before putting it into service. HTH!

Use a stripper(eco friendly types work ok) and remove all the old paint. Reason? If it peels now, it will peel later and take any new paint. Then clean the surfaces with soap and water and let dry completely(24-48 hours). Then use a shellac based primer(BIN for interior or BullsEye 123 for exterior, both made by Zinsser) and prime. Then use which ever paint you choose. The best paint jobs are 70% preparation, 25% paint, and 5% technique.

I want to repaint an interior metal stair rail. it is old so probably all oil based. Painters are telling me that I need a oil based primer to cover it. Oil based paints & primers are no longer available. What product should I use? There is no rust.

Thanks for the responses.. I'm not sure why only the ceiling is having the mildew? My walls are painted a different color with different paint and there are no issues (?). The ceiling was a different color before and there was no issue for years. Then I put this paint in and I get mildew. That's why I figured it was the paint...

clean it prime it and then paint you can look into paints that hold out better to mold and mildew. a would look into getting a fan
