Roses For A New Day -- Fires Can't Stop A Rose Gardener
Comments (9)I was asleep when the reverse 911 call came in. I knew we had Santa Ana conditions and a fire was way, way up in the mountains. Never imagined it would come to this ... Nearly 1 million Californians displaced. I woke up the kids and called my husband who was working late to come and get us! We left at 2 a.m Monday and saw the flames advancing over the ridge. After 5 days with just the clothes on our backs and the 5 of us living pretty much out of our van 100 miles north, we're back in Escondido today and thankful our home was spared. Many of our neighbors were not so fortunate and it's difficult to see all the charred foundations where houses once stood. I drove up the mountain to check on some of our kids' schoolmates and after much confusion mixed with some denial, I realized I couldn't find or see their homes because . . . well, the homes were not there anymore! The schools are getting lists together of kids whose homes burned to the ground. It is so sad. The firefighters who saved our neighborhood commented that we were extremely fortunate since there were walls of flames almost 360 degrees around us. Our kittens are safe but scared and weak. I gave them baths, cleaned out their eyes, ears and noses which were filled with soot. We have lots of ash and some came into the house through the door jams. We will be cleaning all weekend and for weeks to come. I lost some of my rare roses (from the wind, 99 degree heat and not being there to water them) Fatalities were Burgundy Iceberg, Julia's Rose, Spellcaster, Ruby Pendant and others. But I have NOTHING to complain about ... we got out and our kids have a home to come back to .... just a whole lot of cleaning up to do. Very Thankful, Denise...See MoreDang!!!! I just took an inventory of all my stored seeds!
Comments (11)Fantastic list of seeds! I think it is just great that you have focused your life on nature at such a young age. I too would love to have 10 (maybe 5) acres someday to plant a wonderland of natives plants, and am already doing that on 1.25 acres. Difference is, my interest didn't come into sharp focus until age 45. :) There are quite a few seeds on this list I am interested in, and I checked your want list and I have a few on that list. Maybe we can do a trade this fall? Just a note - on your want list is Cynanchum louiseae - this is an extremely invasive non-native vine that is becoming a serious problem in the Northeast US. And it has the additional problem that Monarch butterflies will "sense" it is in the Milkweed family, lay eggs on it, and then it will kill the caterpillars because it is toxic to Monarch larvae....See MoreMy bedroom decor took a u-turn now I'm lost.
Comments (27)I don't think you need to paint the bedroom furniture if you go back to the blue silk rug. With the dark and warm rug, I think it would be better in a least a cream or latte tone if not stained wood, but I think the white can work fine with a lighter rug, If the sofa doesn't need to stay, I'd probably prefer a pair of chairs and table or ottoman in front of the fireplace more than a sofa to the side, but you have the sofa. Move it over there and see how it looks under the window, whether it is too large to go across in front of the fireplace, etc. Then decide. Consider one of the round tables at that end of the room either as an end table to the sofa or between two chairs. If you want the piece under the window to be showcased, you have it in the wrong place. It has too much competition there -- a fireplace, the wood mantel, the black fire screen, a window and a dark mirror all competing with it. Is there room for it across from the bed if you also put a bench there? If not, I would try it at the end of the room where the sofa is but to one side. If you don't have anything under the spot with the painting, it could go into the corner of that wall and the wall where the sofa is. Are the drapes something you had and thought you might use or something bought for this room? You might be able to make them work, but to be honest, I'd like something lighter. Silk panels would look rich. I've seen smocked gauzy white than could take the room in a much different direction. I am guessing your French leanings would favor the silk panels.or long yardage draped across the window and down in an exaggerated scarf treatment....See MoreSending Roses From TX to my home
Comments (6)I agree, they are from either Chamblee's or ARE but I purchased them at Chambersville Tree Farm. I'm planting them in my daughter's yard after figuring out it is far easier to order them again and have ARE and Chamblee's ship them. Prepping the two I did took forever, cutting off every leaf and dead bit and washing the roots and soaking them in a weakk clorox solution. Now they are all sanitary for my daughter's yard here. They are just too big to ship and I don't want to cut off these nice big bushes. I looked into having them inspected but with the holiday coming up we are getting too busy. Easier and safer to leave them here. At least I got to see them in person and smell and touch and decide I really like these roses before I order :). Next time I will go to Chamblee's to look and have them ship them directly....See MoreSTEPHANIE FOWLER
