Why did all my petunias in my planters die so quickly?
Comments (20)Hi grny28, I am going to refer to The Ortho Problem Solver, seventh edition on this, because I am no expert on Petunias (zinnias are my "thing"). The book's coverage on Petunia problems starts on page 262 and continues onto page 264. It has articles on Gray Mold (everywhere in the US), Smog Damage (limited to relatively small coastal areas), Caterpillars, Cutworm Damage, and the last article on Crown and Root Rot (everywhere in the US) seems the most likely culprit. Crown and Root Rot is caused by Phytophthora (I don't think you can say that without spitting a little), a fungus that lives in the soil. It initially attacks the roots or stem at or just below the soil level. The dark dry decay of the lower stem tissue and roots reduces the flow of water to the leaves and flowers, causing the petunia to wilt and die. Crown and Root Rot is common in heavy poorly drained wet soils. The fungus (Phytophthora) is spread by contaminated soil, transplants, and tools. The solution is to remove and destroy infected plants and all the soil within 6 inches of their roots. How do you destroy soil? Well, I guess you could throw it into an incinerator, but I would just put it a plastic bag and send it to the landfill with the rest of the garbage. To prevent a recurrence of Crown and Root Rot, you should improve your soil drainage and drench it with a fungicide containing Captan. That's what the Ortho book says. Repeat the drench monthly during the growing season and let the soil dry out between waterings. I try to avoid problems of this sort with my zinnias by adding a lot of sand to my garden soil to create a sandy loam, and I add Perlite to my indoor growing medium to increase its drainage. Many plants aren't susceptible to Phytophthora, and the problem is in your soil or growing medium, and not at the different nurseries. Comments (3)stir fryi, Check in the FAQ. There's a piece on measuring that I did for the bread tutorial. There are many variables to your flour...type of flour (should choose a brand & stick with it); atmospheric conditions (humid/arid); & how we each measure can & does vary significantly. Personally, I can't be bothered with weighing the flour or even leveling off the measuring cup with a knife. So, I've used my method of scooping & banging the cup against the side of the canister then weighing enough to learn what MY cup of flour weighs. Yours will be different. But, yes...measuring differences can ruin a recipe. It's why I hate to give out baking recipes. When they fail, people say it's a bad recipe...not necessarily so...just different ways of measuring give very different results. After you've made a recipe several times you can more accurately use Linda's technique of guaging the dough's moisture content. But, with a new to you recipe that's a risky technique for all but the most experienced bakers. Also, if you want consistency in your baking learning what YOUR one cup of flour actually weighs will go a long way towards getting you to that consistency. Comments (28)PWM, I'm assuming you'd like the amounts converted to something other than metric? There are many conversion tools on line, one gave me these conversions. Islay, please feel free to correct me if I am wrong: 450g (2 cups) dark brown sugar 175g (3/4 cup) ml evaporated milk 30g ( 2 tbls) butter 1 tsp vanilla extract 55g (1/4 cup) chopped walnuts. Butter a 20 or 30 cm (8 or 9 inch square) tin. In a saucepan, stir together the sugar and milk. Boil until temp. reaches 112 to 116°C. (232-240F, soft ball stage) Or, until a small amount dropped into cold water forms a soft ball that flattens when removed from the water and placed on a flat surface. Remove from the heat, stir in the butter, vanilla and nuts. Continue to beat until the mixture loses its gloss. pour into prepared tin, score with knife and set aside for about 5 minutes. Comments (9)Popmama, you are so generous offering all kinds of plants! I'm not really looking for so much anything aggressive or a good reseader, I just like many attributes of the red Valerian. Faith, I think you may have hit it on the head!!! I tend to split my plants a lot. The one red Valerian that I split this spring was looking good, so I dissected into about 10 plants. That particular spot is where I found the wedged Valerian and the one in the ice plant. Tonight I just found another tiny start in that area. The other Valerian that I transplanted doesn't have any seedlings that I've found but there are so many other plants by where it was, there isn't much chance of anything growing. I'm going to see how I do taking basal cuttings and stem cutting to propagate what I need in the other areas. Luckily the areas I'm putting it in, I don't care where it pops up (at least for now). What I'm finding aggressive is the Shasta Daisy Becky. I love the look of the plant and the extremely long bloom time but it is taking over one of my garden areas.
