Soil amendments for window boxes

We have great window boxes that we mainly plant Torenia in. We have had great success over the last two years, but now I’m questioning whether I should be adding some sort of soil amendment to these boxes annually or just completely rotating out the soil that is in them. The boxes aren’t that large and they’re made of copper so my theory is that the constant heating and drying of the soil is probably zapping all of the nutrients. Does this theory hold weight?

If so is there a preferred soil or amendment for window boxes in New England? I’ve heard that I should be adding a lot more fertilizer to them throughout the summer...
