out of the can white trim with White dove walls?

Our current whole house interior trim is painted straight out of the can white. We recently painted the walls BM White Dove and I’m not sure it’s a great combo with the trim color.
Is there another white that you can suggest for the trim that would work well with the White Dove?
We need to touch up the trim, but not ready to take on converting the whole house trim color. I’m hoping there is a white that we can use to gradually update the trim but won’t be so obviously different so we can do it in stages. Thanks!

Here’s a list of popular white paint colours, which have been objectively measured. It makes comparing their attributes soooo much easier.

when you say you don’t like your current combo, is it because one makes the other appear dirty?

No problem, and thank you! Our kitchen was previously a garage so it really came a long way! It was quite the renovation. Our cabinet doors are from Semihandmade. I’m not sure whether they would be standard or full overlay. The doors and drawers completely cover the cabinet frame though. Our countertops are a white quartz, and our backsplash is a marble subway tile. All goes very well with BM White Dove and Natural Cream!

WD is not my favorite white, but many do love it. First you need to test some whites with your other finishes - floor/counter and backsplash. You also need to consider the trim color that you are using in the rest of your house. Do you have white trim? What color is the current trim color? Whites often do not play well with other whites. When you have picked the color have to have a sample painted with whatever paint the cabinet painter is using. Their color matches are not always perfect, so better to find out before they paint all your cabinets. Many people who have used White Dove have re-painted with Simply White. It still has some yellow undertones, but never looks dingy. WD can go dingy. Personally, my favorite is a color match that BM stores mix for me. Match of Devine Color™ V0101W Icing. The difference between Simply White and Icing is that Icing leans just a bit more toward the orange yellow then the green yellows. I sometimes detect a touch of green (Chartreuse) in Simply White. Computers do a lousy job depicting whites, but this is an analysis of several of the whites that were discussed in this chain. The LCH designations are L - how light the color is, C - Chroma - how colorful or gray the color is and H- Hue - where the color falls on the color wheel. Yellow range is 72-105 Yellow green is 105-130 As you go down in chroma and the colors get closer to gray we see it as a blue or cool undertone (Chantilly Lace, Decorators White)

Hi Julia, I purchased Levalor Designer Colors Whisper #19470101. The light filtering is a good color match with the paint. The blackouts are darker, and maybe slighter gray-er due to the backing, but I'm happy with how they coordinate and function in the bedroom. I used blinds.com. Two arrived fine, one was damaged and had to be remade. They reordered immediately but it still took several weeks to arrive. Hope that helps!

OK I will tell you that until you know what your countertops will be, picking color for your cabinets is going to be very tricky. As to BM Simply White for trim, that is in the Yellow Hue family, and it has a Chroma of .5 which means it has very little color in it; and it has an LRV (light reflective value) of 90. 100 is highest reflective number so that will reflect a lot of light. Nice for trim, and I like "satin" for the finish. Now for wall color. BM White Dove has a Chroma of .58 and an LRV of 83. We like more separation of Chroma (at least .20) and this is way too close. I don't think that will work. So you are in a tricky spot not knowing some key variables such as countertop colors. I think if you want light colors, I would do either of these two colors, but use different "finishes". It will vary from room to room due to light conditions. Since your carpet is tan, and your flooring is dark brown, I think I would lean toward the BM White Dove since it has a bit more warmth to it than Simply White. SW Alabaster has nice lightness and many have used it for both trim and walls, etc. Use Satin finish for your trim, flat or matte for walls and ceiling.

If you are wanting a trim colour which appears more crisp next to White Dove, you need to be looking for a White which has less Chroma by at least 0.2, that’s not too close but not too far away either. That way, neither will make the other look dingy or dirty.

Why not have a look at PPG Delicate White? But there are few others on there too.

Thank you. I like to have some contrast between the wall color and trim. I think the current trim color looks a little gray or stark compared to the white dove walls.
Maybe it would be easier to re paint the walls but I need to give that some time before I suggest that to my husband haha

If you are looking for the trim to be more neutral, whiter, than White Dove, then you need LESS Chroma. A minimum of 0.2 less Chroma than White Dove.

If the current trim looks a little grey next to White Dove, they are probably too close in terms of Chroma.

If you want the trim too also look lighter then it needs a higher Value.

BM Snowfall White matches with BM White Dove. I got this from the Benjamin Moore Color Capture iPhone app.

Using colour DNA attributes makes it easier to compare colours in detail. There isn’t really enough contrast in Chroma to make it worth combining these two colours of white in the same space. I would just choose one.
