Countertop Material for Kitchen Remodel
Comments (27)We have polished Absolute Black granite and nothing stains it, marks it, scratches it, etc. We also routinely put pots/pans straight from the oven and the cooktop on the surface - but I do usually put them near an edge hoping that the expansion will occur w/o causing a crack b/c it's so close to the edge to expand into. No idea if it does, but it psychologically keeps me happy! :-) I sometimes cut on the counter - but not with my good knives! Not b/c the knives will harm the counters, b/c the counters will dull my knives! . The only downside is that if you don't wipe your counters at least every other day, dust will start to accumulate and will show. Ours are wiped daily (whether used or not) as part of the normal cleanup, but not everyone does the same. Oh, and my granite has never been sealed - it's too dense. Sealing stone that doesn't need to be sealed can actually cause issues b/c the sealer isn't absorbed. Instead, the sealer remains on the surface and can cause a haze or other issues. (The sealer has to be removed to fix the issues.)...See MoreGranite or Quartz that looks like soapstone?
Comments (27)Thanks so much for all of the advice. We ended up going with the Negresco granite with a leathered finish and I think it accomplishes the look very nicely. There was a little hiccup where our first slab actually had vertical streaks through the whole thing that apparently was acid rain (?). The installers ended up replacing it with a new slab, which had even more veining so I preferred it anyway. I don't have a great photo taken to see the veining in it, but this is the way it turned out....See MoreLarge thin porcelain tile/slabs flooring and wall claddin
Comments (50)So I am looking at floor and decor 48x24 large porcelain tile. My shower is smidge over 48 in wide and goes to ceiling. The depth is 36 inches. Can someone explain the difficulties. Is it cumbersome Since each piece heavy, does it crack more, issues around cutouts for faucets?. do I need to buy a lot more to allow breakage with the large tile. Seems like the back wall would need no cuts as the tile is exact size when u add in grout on each end. Why is it so much more to install? Sorry I keep reading the difficulty of install and was hoping to understand a bit more. Also didn’t understand the comments about” problem when shower guy shows up 😊...See MoreBlack Countertop time squeeze - Dekton?
Comments (21)UPDATE: I don't know if I am further ahead - or behind - since visiting the stone yards! I read everything I could over the weekend and thought I was ready. I took a lot of pics, made notes, but we still don't know where we are. The biggest issue was that our contractor didn't accompany us, so a) no one would give us prices! Seriously.... grrr. And b) we didn't know how to determine depth of color and how it would work out in our space - a lot more challenging that we had expected. Do good blacks appear grey in the stone yards? Issue a) I can work on; b) ??? Any feedback would be welcome. Our expert is on holiday and out of country until the project begins. We need to buy now. It was confusing and frustrating, to see slabs (vertical, of course) that were called black, but looked just plain grey. What we don't know is - Is that normal? Does the color deepen, look richer, when the stone is horizontal? Only a Sensa San Benedicto (slabs too small, so a lot of extra material to buy) and a Cambria quartz Blackpool ($$$$) were definitely and without a doubt, black. The rest weren't - honed, antiqued, leathered - all called blacks, all looked in varying shades of grey. Is that a normal perception when in the yards? Is that just what the direct light does? Pahlawan - The Silestone Charcoal Soapstone suede they showed us at Cosentino was quite blue-toned. It was a 2 x 8 pc, again, hanging vertically. Your pictures certainly don't look blue, so that confused me completely. We loved the Dekton Keyla, too, but the 56" width won't work for us either. So, seeing the slabs on our own was confusing as heck. Is it just me, or is it typical, first time around? I had hoped to look at one place, love something and come home. It didn't work that way. No pricing didn't help.....That I am working on. How I would love to have stone yards just down the road......See MoreAglitter
