OT? What do you hope to get from this forum?
Comments (51)Although I've been on a number of decorating forums over the last 7 years or so, I've really enjoyed this one. While I can get a little caught up in the problems of new neighbors, housebreaking a dog, or other more conversational posts, My main enjoyment is in seeing how other people work out their decorating issues, what shade of paint works best with oak cabinets, how to choose between granite and tile, and what the craigslist dresser looks like when it gets into YOUR house and gets properly accessorized. I love that. I love the average house renovated and made more perfect for it's owner. I like being able to make a suggestion that helps someone else work out a problem. It's very fulfilling to suggest a paint shade and have that shade put on someone's wall, and seeing the end result--a beautiful room. It's a kick to see my own Kohler Vinnata faucet (that I myself found through the Kitchen's forum) in other settings, perhaps with Emerald Pearl granite and white cabinets, or maybe with Venetian Gold granite and dark cherry cabinets. I love seeing how someone covered their club chairs with cheap matelasse coverlets and they look amazing. I love seeing a porch with drapes made of painter's dropcloths. It's nice to have ideas for more expensive homes with custom details, as well as more modest homes and budgets that need clever thinking to make things beautiful. I love the ideas and the people. I like being able to ask a question about whether to keep the Jacobean dining set I found on Ebay or sell it and get something else. My friends are predjudiced and think all my stuff looks cute. Or........they cannot believe I did red in my entry and say so. You guys are different. Some of you don't care for my style, but are really too kind to say so. Some of you are way too complimentary but it still makes me feel good even when I know you are gushing. And as many have commented before me, it's a real comfortable feeling to be able to worry about moldings or paint shades or furniture fabrics, with a group of people who don't think it's making too much ado about nothing. Comments (34)Rouan, thanks for the ID. I think my mother-in-law told me the same thing, but to me it will be the cheeseburger bird. It must know I've been complaining about it for years and went away as I haven't heard it yet this spring. It's replacement is a bird that sounds like a slow machine gun. eh..eh..eh..eh..eh This site is nice for listening to bird songs, though it may be limited to birds of North America. It isn't terribly helpful if you don't know what the bird is as you are limited to guessing. My son and I did ID the "zebra" bird at our feeder which turned out to be a black & white warbler. Here is a link that might be useful: Bird guide...See MoreO/T - Nikthe greek - may I ask your advice?
Comments (24)Excellent ... I still have bubble wrap left over from insulating my potted roses in summer (last year) - it worked a treat - when they were planted out in early March they'd all developed lots of really healthy roots so being confined to a pot hadn't fazed them at all. The straw arrived as packing around my rose order a few weeks ago - it's lovely clean wheat straw .... I put it all in a plastic bag and have been saving it until I could find a use for it .... guess I'll re-arrange my very overgrown strawberry beds and use the straw to protect the strawberries. I re-read your advice about watering .... it would seem that citrus and roses are almost diametrically opposed when it comes to watering. I haven't watered the plant since I brought it home and soil is still quite damp so I'll keep monitoring it and when it feels dry down to the second knuckle I'll water it....See MoreOT......writers who need to go back to English class !
Comments (58)Annpan, some years ago at a book club meeting one of the members spoke of a letter which she had written for her children to read “if I die”. I told her there was no “if” about it. And I got a laugh from students recently when I remarked (as I was removing hot plates with burning chocolate from a failed classroom experiment and airing the room to get rid of the smoke it produced) to a student who wailed, “We’re going to die”, “Well, yes, you will, but not today.” I recall reading a self-published autobiography which was driving me nuts because _every single anecdote_ ended with the phrase, something like “such is the way things go”. I wanted to scream every time I read it. About halfway through the book I did. Why do so many British people refer to things being “on the floor” when it’s outside, and there is no floor. It’s the _ground_, people....See Morenoseometer...(7A, SZ10, Albuquerque)
