Long shot - looking for rose I remember from childhood
Comments (6)In my part of the east, blooming on Mother's Day (Mid May) and light pink, tight and many petals, rounded bud would often be the repeating rose, New Dawn, or it's once blooming (but very heavy and impressive blooming) identical flowers Dr. W. van Fleet. This bloom time would maybe match if home was northern California. Elsewise, figuring out what blooms on the Mother's Day of your childhood would need a specific city because the CA climate is so very variable. If you were in LA, you could be onto second bloom by then; if you were up in the mountains in the north, first bloom might only be approaching....See MoreWho grows 'Pinks' (Dianthus)
Comments (9)I love Dianthus 'Greystone', a single white that blooms for 2-3 weeks in spring, but which I mostly grow for its foliage. Here it is this spring, and I recently posted a photo of what the foliage looks like for the other 11 months on this thread. Last summer I had a lovely little plant of D. 'Brilliancy' which bloomed all summer long, but unfortunately, the voles ate it, and I wasn't able to find another this spring. As you can see by these two photos, I am a sucker for the low-growing kinds which I find useful as edging plants. I've grown various forms of sweet William/D. barbatus and it left me lukewarm, and have tried some other low-growing types, but these two are the ones I've liked best. I always end up fighting the voles for them, however; they seem to be a favorite....See MoreWhat’s a cool thing or appliance from your childhood home?
Comments (49)A laundry chute and a built into the wall telephone shelf, with a shelf underneath for the fat phone book. We loved to play hide and seek and go down the laundry chute to the basement. Now that would be considered too dangerous. All us cousins had houses with laundry chutes, our aunt with no kids would never let us go down hers. We couldn't understand why...........See MoreWhat is your most memorable toy(s) from your childhood?
Comments (96)I loved my baby dolls and my Barbie dolls. I still have most of them. I loved playing with my plastic farm animals, Colorforms were the best. I had 4 brothers so we all played with Matchbox/Dinky cars, loved slot cars. I was the best hula hooper, played Skip-it. Loved books, one of my favourites when I was really young was a big ABC picture book. My favourite game was Tip-it. We also had Hands Down, Sorry, Booby Trap which I still have. We all liked the game Mouse Trap, I don't think we ever played it properly, we just set it up to catch the mouse. Spirograph was another favourite until the coloured ink ran out. I liked playing with tea sets always plastic until my Aunt sent my cousins and I each a porcelain tea set. I sure wish I still had that. My Mom would put tea in the tea pot and give us some sugar cubes for our cups of tea. My Dad traveled in the USA for work and bring us home the popular toys or books that weren't out in Canada yet. He would bring home Mexican jumping beans and we would put them in front of the heat register to watch the beans jump around....See Moregracie01 zone5 SW of Chicago
