Checking in on the barred owls

Cornell Labs runs some live web cams of nesting sites and I've been checking in on the barred owls among others.

Quite an education...She brings the food in and eventually removes the carcasses. I've seen bird feathers and lots of mice and even a fish and a frog. But I was most surprised to see a squirrel. I thought they'd be too big for her, but I guess not.

If you're lucky, she moves and you can catch a glimpse of an owlet.

I just looked in on the Savannah Ospreys and she's sitting on what looks like 2 eggs and has had one chick hatch already....

I was real surprised that it stayed there for so long. I kept thinking I will keep watching it until it flies away. After a while I thought, if I stay here too long it will be too late to see any warblers. When I checked on the owl an hour later it was gone. Richard

It seems a little late to be nesting, but Barred Owls can be very protective of their nest.

Cute baby owl. We have a pair that lives around here somewhere. I'm not sure where they are nesting but we hear them at night and see them in the garden once in a while. Hunting on our lawn.

When I was a child we had free run chickens. The idea that chickens can not fly is a myth because there were always some that in the summer roosted in the trees. Owls of all sized would attempt to grab them. One time we found a dead chicken on the ground with a tiny screech owl dead under it. Owls when they have nestlings will attempt to catch all sizes and types of prey.

Thought I'd share this pair of Barred Owl earrings. Only two are available. This seller has a wonderful line of Jabebo earrings featuring all sorts of birds, insects, and other animals. Click on his store to see them. I love that the left and right earrings are somewhat different.

I bought a pair of Evening Grosbeak earrings from him because back when I hand-tamed the wild birds the grosbeaks used to land on my shoulders to feed. I haven't seen them in years, and I miss them.

They are getting so big so quickly. But I don't like seeing the carcasses of other birds I like, like the downy woodpecker in there now...

They are so cute. I love owls. Never saw many until a few years ago. The

Snowies were migrating and made a short stopover in my town. Everyone

was going out in the Country and looking for them. My SIL took a picture

of one on a light post...they are so Glorious and "in charge". LOL And, much

larger than they look in pictures.
