New perfumes - really irritating!
Comments (23)weed that's so true! A funny story~ One day when I was cleaning house I was re-applying the vanilla oil that you put on the lamp rings that fit over the lightbulbs, and I accidentally got some on my hands while applying it. I went to work that day and 3 people told me I smelled really good and wanted to know what perfume I was wearing, they wanted to get some too. The only reply I could think of before I broke out laughing was 'Parfum eau de Lightbulb'. That stuff really has lasting power! ;)...See More"Irritational' fears? Have any?
Comments (35)Joanie38, the bridge you refer to is the other Chesapeake Bay Bridge - it crosses the bay down at the bottom in VA. I've been on that one once years ago but I don't remember much about it. Annie, I used to drive the Deegan all the time. I went to Fordham in the Bronx, lived for a time up in Westchester as well as in Manhattan. I've driven pretty much every highway around NYC. None of them are much of a pleasure, especially in the South Bronx! Allison, I've only had the one panic attack. The first few times I had to use the bridge following the panic attack, I used a variety of mental/physical exercises on my approach to the bridge and was able to stave another attack off when I could feel my heart starting to beat faster. Now I just focus my mind on other things as I cross the bridge and have really just tried not to think about it at all. Interestingly, the way the bridge is designed, with separate spans, one eastbound and one westbound, I discovered that driving eastbound was fine. But westbound, the span has a different curve to it, so you can really see how high you are going and right as you near the top, the cement barriers change over to rails that allow you to see directly down below. Anyway, thanks for the advice about diet - I actually don't drink much alcohol and don't have caffeine at all, and very rarely smoked or processed meats. But I always have water with me when I'm driving, so I'll make sure to follow that advice! Unfortunately, there is no way though I could have taken my hands off the wheel during that panic attack to drink water! I didn't even realize what was happening until it happened. But now I know what the signs are so I can prepare myself in advance!...See MoreOT - Irritating Misusages of Language
Comments (114)Mary RP is 'Received Pronunciation' considered the accentless 'standard' form of English. See the description below. I can well understand that local accents can be difficult to follow. Geordie is from the North East up to the borders of Scotland, and 'Scouse' is the nasal whine of Liverpool, but not heard outside that city where the local population speak with a Lancashire or Cheshire accent. The old 'plummy' cut-glass way of speaking is fast dying out, as was mentioned on the off-shoot of this thread, even the Queen's way of speaking has become greatly modified and easier on the ear. Do you notice if you hear old recordings of US speech that women's voices have developed a lower pitch . .. as they have over here? Mrs Thatcher is an eg. She obviously had elocution lessons when she went into politics which, although making her sound unnatural at least put her voice down half an octave! And yes, we do swallow our words and most of us speak much quicker than you do in the US, although 'country' speech is slower. Re Aussie 'fair dinkum' I think it means 'genuine/real Here is a link that might be useful: RP English...See MoreSkin irritation from Mexican bush sage?
Comments (1)That would be a new one for me. There are a lot of plants that can produce dermal problems, like members of the carrot (Apiaceae) and rue (Rutaceae) that produce furanocoumarins. Heracleum mantegazzianum (hogbane, giant parsnip) is a splendid example. Primula obconicais another example. Salvias may produce some compounds that may cause really rare cases of sensitivity, but I know of no examples.....See Moretedhort
