Freezing temp last night (6b), will my rose buds survive?

I noticed this morning the new shoots on my Teasing Georgia look droopy and withered. Will they bounce back? The temp for this weekend 36 to 44. Should I wrap them up?

Wrapping won't help. Make sure the plant is watered and trim off parts that die. You will be able to tell soon what survives.

Rose bushes do fine overnight down to temps of about 28F. An untimely freeze down to 22F can kill an entire bush that has started to leaf if it is nonhardy.

Last week I received 2 roses (DAs "Crocus Rose" and "White Pearl in a Red Dragon's Mouth") from Ashdown Roses. I got an email that they were on sale. They were in excellent shape, and the Dragon's mouth rose has 3 new buds on it. I also received (DAs "Christopher Marlowe") from Jung Seeds a week or so ago, also. It, too was in excellent condition. I would definitely order from either place again. Ashdown's sent me an email that they were delaying shipment until the weather cooled a little....and then the rose arrived as was promised. I am sorry you had a bad experience with J&P....however, you are not the first person I've heard that's unhappy with them. Hope you can get a response from them, or either your money back. Michelle ps...I'm not the Michelle with the adult beverage and the credit card mentioned above ..lol (*.*)

Well, I have a tough Meyer lemon that I'm sure was neglected for many years but this has been a hard winter on it, lost the flowers and young growth, leaves look curly, but fruit is still good. Watering the Meyer has helped a lot. I threw bedsheets over it. I planted 2 new young ones ( a grapefruit and a mandarin) that were the frost hardiest I could find, boy do they look yellow and cold. I don't know how much longer this can last.

Oh my lord. So sorry to hear that. Reminds me of a time when I lived in Atlanta and about a quarter of the trees were lost when temps suddenly dipped hard. Frost damage is different on every plant out there and may not be obvious until many weeks or months later. It is common for damaged new growth looks mushy and wet; this look can then turn to a scorched look, a bleached look or even a brown look. It is more hard to tell on old growth. Regardless what happens, this problem usually does not kill hydrangeas. You may end up with ugly leaves for a while but new growth should start in several weeks! Keep them mulched with 3-4" of mulch up to the drip line and maintain the soil evenly moist. Do not add fertilizer while the plant recovers.

Thanks all, for the different posts on cold Peony shoots. Mine are coming along, some sprouted quite well. They got cold last weekend, but were just showing on top of the dirt, so I fluffed the leaves up and left them alone. Snowed and cold for 5 days, very windy, with temps down to 20F at night. Daffodils were quite pitiful, laying down with snow on them. Then temps got a bit warmer, up to 50F+ this week, SUNNY, so the shoots are GROWING. With snow and cold at 30F predicted, I went out and put old plastic pots over all the shoots that were up. I used big pots over the new Tree Peonies, some had buds showing! I may go put some sheets over cages on the largest Tree Peonies, too big for pot covers. I am hoping the pots prevent wind burn, snow sitting on the foliage to freeze and break the cells. I did find one Peony with a very wilted leaf turning black. I am not sure if it is a herbacous leaf or a new Tree sprout. All the others look pretty well for being snow covered and out in the bitter cold. Not much we can do to change the weather, but I hope that covering the new growth with pots, gives me enough protection to get some flowers this year. Glad I hadn't tossed all those old plastic pots!

I had 24F here in z5/6!! The tips were all drooped on several well established roses and they are turning black and are now dying. I had open crates over my bare roots I planted several weeks ago and I put cracked pails over the body bags that were leafed out already. Took them off ASAP in the morning. They are still calling for another freeze this coming Tuesday night.

After a freeze it can help a little to overhead water and wash off the frost in the morning before sunshine melts the frost.

We had record low temperatures down to 18 and 19 for a couple of days after we'd had record highs in the 80s 2 days before. Most of the roses were leafing out and many of them are definitely singled and lost some leaves but so far I don't see any that had been alive and are now dead. Some hardy roses were totally unfazed by that temperature AND the blizzard of 5 inches of snow two days ago. Sheesh. Talk about wild weather swings.

For the most part roses are pretty adaptable particularly if they're in their preferred zones, but keep an eye on them for a few weeks till they start putting out new leaves. If the canes shrivel and dry up, cut them off and see if it'll regrow from the base.
