Design Dilemma Bedroom Remodeling

Master Bedroom Vanity Space

Our master bedroom has this obnoxious sink area. I've been told it was used as a makeup vanity? We're trying to get our house ready to sell and want some ideas for this space. We never use the sink and the door that you see in the picture on the left is the master bathroom. So another sink is about 5 ft away. The bedroom pic is very old, but wanted to give you all the best idea of the layout since it's such a tight space. We definitely aren't opposed to removing the sink altogether, but want a purpose for the area. I have scoured the internet for ideas, but most people either don't have the sink blocked in or it is their only sink for the master bathroom, which neither is the case for us. Any suggestions much appreciated!

You might just leave it as it is if you intend to sell your home soon. The new owner can then do what they wish with the space.

Thank you! We considered that as well, but it's such an eye sore, especially with the blue Formica. Our realtor suggested removing the sink but leaving the counter space as a vanity still,just no sink. Our last resort is just sprucing it as is, but I figured I'd see what ideas creative minds might have.

I’m in Canada and the townhome we just bought used “master bedroom” and ”second bedroom”. The bathroom is actually “master bathroom” too, though en-suite is more popular. I think “principal bedroom” works well, especially if describing short term rentals (where multiple couples might share a rental), rentals by you adults (again where roommates might be sharing), or multi- generational homes. You still want to confirm which room is the largest, but there isn’t a need to explain who then “master” of the home is. Random point- when I’ve booked Airline tickets for my son, he always gets the prefix “master” vs “Mr” on his tickets/booking. Hubby and I always get a good laugh, as there are definitely days where it feels like he runs things in our home! Maybe he should get the new master bedroom haha.

Thanks for your opinions! My son's room in the house we're temporarily living in right now is actually the exact size we're proposing reducing his bedroom to, so we can now visualize the space (it's oriented differently, but the dimensions are almost exactly the same). It's definitely not a large space, but does not feel too cramped by any means (my childhood bedroom was smaller!) The first thing I did was to go over the proposed new layout with my son and he actually quite likes it (he has sensory issues and always prefers a more enclosed space to a more expansive one, which is why he chose that room as his room), so that part is not actually a concern for us. It also seems like we can widen our master closet without needing to take quite a full 2-feet from our son's room, so that will help. I'm not really concerned about how big the room is relative to the other rooms, I'm more concerned about the size of the room as a standalone and if there are any practical layout or other issues I haven't concerned in the proposed new layout. Option one with a smaller budget is to keep the same layout, swap the existing tub for a free-standing one. 5'6 wide shower is enough for 2, it looks like the length of it is about the same minus the bench. You can always shrink the vanities to expand the shower , you defiantly don't need 11'5 for vanity's. Option two if budget allows to re-route the plumbing, you can do the entire bathroom over-haul like moving the wall and vanities forward to expand the closet, shrink the vanity space and move the toilet on the vanity wall and the rest will be all shower. Maybe something like this to give you an idea Good luck

I dont know how to do it without wiring , but if you were open to wiring… You could always put up a Seura lighted mirror. They are very nice looking and the light is great. Ideally you would also put a sconce on either side of the mirror but it doesnt look like there is tons of space, maybe 30”- 36”? You could always put the sconce above the mirror. Then you would have a great make up counter.

I think the realtor has the best idea just make it a make up vanity , I never did get this idea but it was popular at one time. When showing have acute little make up stool there with some accessories and get some better lighting.

Thanks! The lighting is definitely terrible. This is the only part of the house that hasn't been updated so it stands out. I like the stool idea though! A chair would be in the way of that door.

I had the same setup. I removed the sink vanity and made the space into a double rod closet. Removing the sink was the expensive part of that. Sealing the water line (our house is on a slab) and conforming to rodent/pest control. No one ever objects to more closet space.
