How many gardeners have pets as well?
Comments (91)About 40 miniature horses, 3 house dogs that are like my children [Cupcake and daughters Fruitcake and Tutti Fruiti], 5 outside dogs [all small, 3 are Cupcake's children], 6 cats, all siamese cross that came from a wonderful stray momma, Mildred [now deceased] and about 35 chickens - Jersey Giants, cochins, different kinds of bantams, black tailed Japs - the Giants play in the yard during the day, go back to their big coop at night and the bantams are in roomy cages and will hopefully start laying soon, then the 6 Heinz 57 that run around in the barn. My favorite is Gorgeous George, a big palomino Buff Orpington who follows me everywhere. And a wonderful Significant Other who loves them as much as I do! Comments (16)Lindsay, I love your photos. Looks like a lovely spot to spend time in. I have both, a mixed garden area near the house as well as a field just for lining out daylilies. The mixed area is still a work in progress -- each year I inevitably remove things, move others around and change my mind completely about others. I haven't focused so much yet on keeping a steady stream of blooms as much as trying to get the mature heights and sizes of many of the plants just right. Some things I planted I didn't realize would get as tall as they do, like the 3 foot tall white balloon flowers that surprised me this year and had to be moved to the back lol. My biggest weakness is that I want a little of EVERYTHING in these beds but they inevitably look too cluttered and I am slowly training myself to take things out so the bed looks more balanced and not like it's about to bust at the seams. Comments (15)I don't know what all I will have in my garden. I will probably let my girls help decide as I won't need all the stuff that comes out of it. Youngest daughter has two greenhouses and raises some starts of veggies and flowers, so will she what she has started. I think I will let her raise the sweet potatoes, though I would love to, but the rabbits like to eat them off before they get a good start. I will probably get just about all the sweet potatoes they raise to do something with. I did last year. We canned a lot of salsa last year. It is good to see that so many are planting a garden no matter how big or small. I too started helping on the farm before I left home with the garden. I had a pony and we didn't have a tiller way back then, so my Dad would hitch my pony to a walk behind cultivator and I would have to ride the pony up and down each row to keep the weeds out. It worked! We used to raise some strawberries and pick them and sell them for $.25 a quart! What would that buy you today, two or three berries? Sue...See MoreLoneJack Zn 6a, KC
