My "old" daylilies (the ones that have been here for years) are scattered here and there about the garden in what are mixed shrub boarders and mainely mixed in between roses and lilies in the rose beds. Didn't plan the rose bed thing, just took out perrenials that weren't doing well when I got the bug to plant roses but of course left the lovely and easy care daylilies.

This spring I got the daylily bug and have made two new beds that are completely daylilies. I love the look of a mass planting of daylilies in bloom so thats what I was going for in my new beds.

I have a mixed garden - some of the plants I use are coneflowers (echinacea), asters, liatris, perovskia, geranium "Rozanne"(blooms spring to fall), phlox, ornamental grasses, veronica "Goodness Grows" (blooms spring to fall), salvias (bloom spring to fall), balloon flowers, clematis, some shrubs and for the spring crocuses and daffodils. Below is a link to a thread about a gorgeous mixed daylily garden I recently went to (with photos). I've never been there in the spring, but he said he grows lots of daffodils and peonies.

I have daylilies mixed in my perennial bed. They are really neat mixed in because they start blooming when many of my perennials are spent, so there's always color! Here's a couple of pics:

I have a couple areas that are or will be (I'm in new construction and some beds are still in planning/planting stage) all daylilies. But I have others that are mixed. My favorite perennials to mix with daylilies are veronica (sunny border blue speedwell, which is really purple imo, and tickled pink), penstemon, phlox, clematis and campanula. If you have taller daylilies, I also think coneflowers, black-eyed susans and daisies are nice.

This is my bed that faces the road. I keep it in bloom with various plants all during the spring, summer and fall. Plant material besides daylilies includes Tree Peonies, variegated red-bud, other lilies, hybiscus, allocatia, potted Australian tree fern, miniature white pine, bulbs, annuals to name a few...Bob {{gwi:850356}}

Very nice Bob, What is the very tall lilly in the back? Ive been dying to get my hands on a black beauty lily, or some turks caps.
I love the look of liatris with my DL's, I also planted mini roses, peruvian lilies, bee balm, crocosima, golden creeping jenny, coreopsis, shasta daisys, guara, oriental, and asiatic lilies, hibiscus, and rose of sharon, ect. I also have a really cool dwarf pomegranite bush, that has very bright orange flowers, and gets mini fruits on them. I think they are just like any other flower, you can plant them next to anything thats your preferance and they will still look good! -Jessica

My one bed of daylilies also has glads and roses, and in the corner a barrel with jasmine and moon flowers.
Another bed of daylilies has portulacas, rocket snaps, sunflowers, mandevilla.
And yet another bed has daylilies with loosestrife, Rudbeckia 'indian summer', columbine, liatris, dahlias,and a butterfly bush.
O geez, one more has echinaceas, gerbera daisies, gloxinia, shoo fly, astilbe, more glads, another butterfly bush, more sunflowers, salvia, ...I can go on, but I say mix it up and I'm sure it'll look good..you can always change things around if it doesnt come out how you want.

wow, thanks everyone! I love this look of the mixed beds of flowers. I've gardened for many years, but its been a yearly experiment - whatever seeds I could get to sprout. I'm trying to plan a nice set of flower beds around my house, for next year. I've got some rosebushes to work with, otherwise its a blank canvas. (I guess I can move those too, huh?)

I've just got to figure out which colors will look best - my house is a terra-cotta colored brick. I like bright colors, and most of them show up really well. Also pastel yellow - but the daylilies I like are either white or bright! :)

Lindsay, I love your photos. Looks like a lovely spot to spend time in.

I have both, a mixed garden area near the house as well as a field just for lining out daylilies. The mixed area is still a work in progress -- each year I inevitably remove things, move others around and change my mind completely about others.

I haven't focused so much yet on keeping a steady stream of blooms as much as trying to get the mature heights and sizes of many of the plants just right. Some things I planted I didn't realize would get as tall as they do, like the 3 foot tall white balloon flowers that surprised me this year and had to be moved to the back lol. My biggest weakness is that I want a little of EVERYTHING in these beds but they inevitably look too cluttered and I am slowly training myself to take things out so the bed looks more balanced and not like it's about to bust at the seams.

I have mine mixed in with other perennials. I like that look better than just daylilies in one spot. I do plan on getting many more though, so they may take on a bed of their own! I have mine planted with Asters, Liatris, geraniums, Phlox, Clematis, roses, some annuals, Coreopsis and spring bulbs.

I have mine mixed into a (mostly) edible landscape. I feed the petals to my parrot (and munch on them myself from time to time). I have dwarf fruit trees, herbs, greens and other edible flowers.

My garden is a catch-all. if I find a plant I like, I just make room for it in the garden. I also have several beds and 2 or three patches that are just dls.. I like the effect of a wild looking garden and that's pretty much how mine is....Ellie

Mine is mixed too, with swaths of daylilies among the other plantings. I like the effect, and it gives me a longer season of visual appeal. My yard is too small to have an "all or nothing" area that's gorgeous for a couple months, then empty of color or foliage interest the rest of the year.

I prefer DL in mixed perennial beds too. In part because I like a succession of color palettes and textures and in part because I think it makes the incredible beauty of the DL stand out better when they display in mixed company.

One spectacular idea I saw in a garden catalog was to mix daffodil, DL, and asiatic lilies. They bloom in succession (daff's, then DL, then AL) each hiding the previous one's foliage.
