help with split red cedar shake siding on Long Island

Hi everyone. We live in this charming old home near the water. The old split shakes are really too dark. We want to change to white or pale gray. Landscaping, garden design, window boxes and circular driveway fixes will come after. We love the windows (mix of casement and bay/bow) but are also considering an upgrade to something a little less old fashioned on the bow windows. What should we do to maintain the cottage charm? Can the dark siding be painted or should they be stained? Will it look better white or pale gray with white trim? Or should we just wash all that dark color off to showcase the red cedar color?
