dining room update help, please

this is a long wall coming off our kitchen and extending into a window area with two chairs for reading/coffee (used daily). new chandelier pic attached. need help figuring out some ideas for what to put on this wall - want sophisticated but cozy, our style is clean, modern country (we live in the country, essentially). Console is needed as we grab dishes etc from it daily. This is the main eating area off the kitchen and table is used for all meals, homework, board games, puzzles. I have attached a pic of some art pieces (propped up) I recently bought (but can return) Thank you!

Hi Cheryl,

You have a lovely kitchen and dining area! It's good to hear that you get plenty of use out of it, too. If I'm catching the pictures correctly, I think the two art pieces with blue would be one or the other on the wall and the grays with black stripe with be hung as a set. Let me know if I'm mis-interpreting.

To me, the art piece on the left with blues would be interesting with your chandelier. You've got some other blues going on in the kitchen and the sitting area as well. It would be nice if it were bigger for the wall - maybe mounted on a bigger panel behind it? (Barn board or something like that?)

Which art piece are you leaning towards?

I really love both of the blue art pieces but they are both too small on their own. I am giving some thought to hanging on off-centre and then playing around with some other scaled pieces for a simple gallery wall (would love to get a mirror in there just to scatter light, possibly another small art piece?). So hard when you live in a space for 15 years to see past it !!

Hi juliekcmo. I'm procrastinating right now, so here I am, on GW. I'm sure I'll get motivated to find the painting supplies that are packed away in the basement soon... So, that room is really nice. The one thing that immediately hits me is the need for curtain panels. If the color is a keeper (you know how hard it is to actually convey the true color in a photo) I might play with the idea of curtains that are closet to the wall color, so they add texture but yet not add another color. That's where I'd start. I think a rug would really be nice in there too. And since you have to move the table anyway when Thanksgiving comes It would be easy to roll it up (take it to the carpet place nearby and have it cleaned during that time) and then put it back after the holidays all nice and fresh. Sort of like a little spa time for the rug. ;) Then, maybe a new chandy. It can act as a piece of art in the room. You can also add one of those faux plaster thingamajigs on the ceiling where the chandy goes. Medallion, that's it. Faux plaster medallion. That really would give your ceiling more interest. Well, I guess I better go find the blue painters tape and get my project moving....

This refers to Bedroom #2 which you indicated may be for an elderly relative. Your doorway into this bathroom is only 24” which will make it impossible for a wheelchair and difficult for a walker. I encourage you to remove or make more shallow the linen closet so you can enlarge the bathroom access door. Then make the Tub shower combo a Shower with low or no curb and a handheld wand. You never know when you will need this for an elderly relative or an immediate family member who has had surgery/broken leg. Make sure there is enough clearance on the sides of the toilet for grab bars and/or to assist in lifting. It would be simpler for this person to access the bathroom through one door instead of two, especially at night. You could remove the anteroom and make this a simple large bathroom with access door to hall and another access door to bedroom. It seems overly complicated in its current configuration.

I hope this helps a bit. I lightened your pics. I was able to lighten the second pic much better than the first one. So more pics would definitely help. You have great taste. Really elegant space. And you can definitely combine some blues with what you have in dining room, if that would work with your overall scheme. I like the drapes you have shown. Whatever you choose, I think a silk or silk type of fabrication would be beautiful for your room. And I think the fabric is the key factor. I could also see sonething like this - and this one is done in a faux silk.

Off-centre is a good possibility. When I want to arrange multiple pieces, I'll cut out newspaper the size of the art and put it on the wall with painter's tape. Then I can get a better idea of size and arrangement. I know what you mean about developing "blind spots" over time to things.

excellent idea! I've tried mocking up with grabbing random things around the house but never exactly what I'm needing so isn't representative.... my son laughed when I tried using placemats to mock up art....
