You say you noticed the lower unit was blowing much harder after they replaced the capacitor. They would appear to have changed the airflow also when they did this. Why else would it blow 5x-10x harder after they "fixed" it?

Why do you think there's anything wrong with the upstairs unit if nothing has changed with that one?

It may have nothing to do with the motor, the difference may be in the duct work. Motors do sometimes fail by not ramping properly... but this is extremely rare, probably less than 5% of the time in which a motor fails.

If duct work is sized properly there will be an appearance that the fan is blowing better.

If the duct work is over sized -- air flow will appear weak. Air takes the path of least resistance. The more over sized the duct work is, the least amount of resistance.

Why? because if you give a place for the air to go... it will go there. If where you blow it too is open it won't feel as strong.

Take a garden hose with no sprayer on the end of it. Water coming out full force measure the distance the water comes out from the hose.

Now put a sprayer on the end of the hose: how far can you shoot the water?

Has the water increased? NOPE.

Design problems aren't fixed by methods you demonstrate in this thread.

(Note: a duct system is more complicated than a garden hose, with or without sprayer.)

Well I held my laptop to my head and could see (A) Fins bent and smashed from being repeatly hit by a Spaldind soccer. and (B) Blade desighned to rotate CCW mounted on a CW rotating motor. Yeah it is 'possible' to spin the fan the wrong way, but a number of things would have had to contribute to that this doesn't just magically happen. Blower fans are pretty much stupid proof, so you if you managed to spin one the wrong way well you'd probably be entitled to an award of some kind.

Probably more likely to forget to set the set screw on the wheel hub, or not get it tight enough and it kills the motor shaft... requiring a new motor. That can happen pretty quick.

Bent fins? not likely either. If that wheel has any integrity deficiency it's more likely to blow itself apart due to centrifugal force.

Winter ending: Well it's rare to really have a winter here. At least what I would consider a winter. (I'm from the frozen tundra of Wisconsin over 20 years ago - now in Katy, Texas)

When work dries up in HVAC I just shift focus to work around the house. (A house that will eventually become another rental for my other company I own and operate.)

The two trees toward the front of the fence are now gone as well. The drainage runs all the way to the street.

So this is fixing a quite complex situation built up by years and years of stupidity of former owners. It's more than just fixing a drainage problem --- this is probably a 3 for 1 fix --- maybe a 4 for 1.

Had to do all this by hand. It's a shovel ready job, get a shovel ready and go!

I've got enough dirt to fill probably (5) 20 yard trash bins. I spend maybe 3-4 hours a day working on this... but I started this before the corona stuff. (I'm always working on something.)

Ray,Ray,Ray. I have a friend that would like to make concrete castings of your feet. No,he isn't going to put them on Hollywood Boulevard Walk of Fame,more like the dinosaur museum. That much dirt hasn't been moved with a shovel since before illegal aliens became guest workers.

It sound's like in the past drainage problems caused dirt to be piled up in the yard until house was sitting in a basin. When this *@!& black dirt dry's out I will be addressing a similar situation with a house we bought. Since it was built in 83,dirt was imported until house was the low point. Dry cracked soila in Summer followed by seasonal rain caused foundation to shift. A widely advertised foundation contractor was hired to correct foundation. Once contract was signed, they pulled shrubs, dug holes around house,drilled and busted holes through slab inside house "THEN" told homeowner additional things he must do in order to make the famous "Lifetime Warranty" valid. Amongest those was installing gutters on house. During ensuing years,contractor was called back due to continued shifting. Last year contractor marched out new requirments that homeowner must forfill in order to preserve warranty. One of those stipulations was removal of more than 35 year old Live Oaks. Owner put the place up for sale and buyers spooked when they found out about ongoing foundation issues. I bought the place hoping to draw on long time experience to turn the tide. So far,I've come to an aggrement with foundation contractor that they don't have to do any work for one year but keep door open to continued warranty while I work on house. If you want to call me dumb,,wait for the rest and you might change that to insane. I don't believe the contractor can legally back out on warranty over those trees since they were there when they issued warranty. Here's the part where common sense (much less engineering) has been applied during the time foundation continued shifting. Remember when I said hose was the low spot after all that dirt was hauled in on the yard? It's still that way. Remember that gutters were required by foundation company as condition of warranty? The gutter downspouts dump water in concentrated areas which is worse for foundation than if water was destrubited along intire perimeter. What might you ask,are people supposed to take away from what I've said here? In my professional opinion,based on decades around building trades,one ,two or three man operations are very often more skilled than multi-location giants. Hug your owner/operator HVAC technician next time you see him,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,unless you happen to stand 6 feet,weigh 210 pounds and have a beard. Ray will just settle for a hand shake,thank you.

On my house drainage issues: The neighbors said the previous owner (old widowed lady) thought the house was sinking into the mud.

But drainage had everything running to the house from the back and to one side of the house.

If the house is sinking into the mud why hasn't the sewer line snapped and started backing up? How about the incoming water line -- why hasn't that snapped?

These pipes are no match for a moving / sinking foundation... are they?

People often times look at things backward. I got the house at an attractive price, I knew it was going to be a lot of work going in. Never been afraid of hard work.

That said, never want water run off running towards a house --- any part of it. As you know putting gutters on a house isn't a cure all either.

You make two important points that I agree with.

Gutters should be a last resort and seldom needed other than above entry doors. Once gutters are installed,fascias are neglected until they rot.

I am also not afraid of work these days. I often sit right down beside it and nod off.
