When Life Gives You Lemons
Comments (16)Key limes can be finicky and ours produced tons of fruit sevral times during the year but it would produce well one year and then take a year off and come back strong the next year. Our Meyers lemon took over the yard and we had so many lemons it was not funny. The Hamlin produced well one year little the next and tons the next. The Valencia and Ruby Reds produced tons yearly. The sour orange produced well year after year. The honey tangerine took forever to fruit but when it began fruiting it produced yearly. It took time for some of them to mature and then you just have to learn your trees and know their cycle. Some of ours just fruited heavily and then rested the next year. We always had fruit though and it was so nice to walk outside and pick a fresh grapefruit for breakfast or oranges to make orange juice and lemons or limes whenever you needed them. Now I am attempting to grow citrus in containers and it is taking time but things will pay off down the road. Linda...See MoreWhen life gives you Peppers and Tomatoes
Comments (10)Oh that stupid electric bill complaint. I hang out most of my laundry to dry nearly year round (no unmentionables go on the line), we are on tou - which means if I use the power during the day it costs more - so I do all of the housework, laundry etc on the weekend and I still got complaints. Our rates have gone up and I am still holding the line at the total we paid 3 years ago- and still the whining. I even offered to switch responsibilities - I pay the utilities, he pays the insurances - that went over like a lead balloon. I've had my hobby greenhouse for 5 months and only ran a small fan - the whining - so now I have it totally off grid - running fans and pumps etc with solar power. And I bet you the next bill will come in and the whining will still go on! Have you got a side burner on your barbecue? Maybe that might help - but if your spouse is like mine - it's a monthly hobby to whine anyway! I still love him but sometimes... to the moon.... :)...See MoreWhen Life Gives You Lemons
Comments (11)Kathe, I agree with all that's been said about your table. Its wonderful. I am so bothered by what happened to your Dad that the sores were THAT bad. Sure sounds like no one bathed him or checked him properly. Scary thought, and I'm sure its a worry for you now with having to stay on top of them. I will keep him, and you, in my prayers. Luvs, its not just some NHs. A year ago Dec when Dad went in the hospital after doc gave him meds he shouldn't have, Dad came home with some bad bedsores on his ankles and toes. From the hospital of all places!! They had put socks on his feet initially to keep them warm, and apparently no one bothered to take them off and bathe or check his feet. I was so mad when he came home, and I discovered the bedsores! We had nursing care coming in several times a week trying to treat them. I was thankful they were on his feet and nowhere else, but they caused him a LOT of pain and discomfort till I lost him several weeks later. The hospital also didn't seem to realize he couldn't turn over in bed at all and just lay in same position waaaay too long. All they did was raise and lower the head of the bed apparently! And this is a huge, well-known hospital and trauma center in Phoenix. (guess I'm STILL mad it seems) hugs, Karen...See More"If life gives you weeds, compost them." (2nd try)
Comments (1)That sounds heavenly, Melissa! I can picture it all through your sensitive and vivid descriptions. I, too, find that Alfred de Dalmas takes awhile to grow into his charming potential, but when he does, each year just gets better. I'm curious to hear future reports on your Aennchen von Tharau. What is its origin? If your AvT turns out to be R Alba Maxima, wonder if every AvT is R Alba Maxima. I grow Maxima and have considered tracking down AvT for either my garden or a friend's. I must be on a quest to try every Alba. :-) Thank you for the lovely morning tea and gardening journal moment! Carol...See Morenekotish
