Newbie - Lessons learned this year!!! What have you learned?
Comments (27)Stage Rat, thanks so much. I googled it and that is what it is. I will go right out and dig it up. I don't want those in my flower beds. I wish all my flowers looked that healthy though. I forgot to mention lesons learned about which containers worked best for me. My favorite is the round containers that I get cakes or cookies in (also an excuse to buy them). I make newspaper pots, and they are so much easier to plant out than to try and get the babies out of a milk bottle or 2L bottle. I think the newspaper helps the soil also. I tear off the top as I am dropping them in the hole so that they don't wick away the water. All of mine that were planted that way are doing the best. Also, I put a small water bottle in the center and use plastic shower caps (16 for $1) from the dollar store on top of them--it works great. The second favorite is the 1/2 size stem table aluminum pans from Sam's. The shower cap fits on them also with a small water botter to hold it off the babies. I think I will learn many more lessons from the responses to this thread. Thanks again for helping me ID the plant. Also thanks to everyone who shared their lessons learned. It is a great help. Comments (85)Vermicomposting since November 2015. I've learned that it's important not to let drain flies get established in your bin because it is almost impossible to get rid of them once they are. They can live on the bacteria in vermicompost, just like earthworms, and for some reason there tends to be no earthworm cocoons in the bin when drain fly larvae are present. The larvae can survive for 17 days and the flies start laying eggs within hours after they emerge. I eventually got rid of them by placing a window screen on my bin, killing the drainflies on the walls of the bin daily, and dumping an excessive amount of cardboard bedding on the bin. I've also learned that I can make the worms attack their bedding immediately by moistening it and sprinkling milk powder evenly on it. I think it's because the sugar in the milk (lactose) dissolves and is absorbed by the bedding. It drives them crazy....See MoreWhat makes you say 'darn' about yourself?
Comments (1)I am not sure what you mean, but I think it is about menopause symptoms. I didn't have any emotional signs going through menopause. But I do have a story regarding hormones. I was having serious headaches, that went on for around 17 years. I was around 40 when the doctors tossed me in the "nerve" basket. Hormones would cure everything of course, but I wouldn't take them. Finally my doctor said I have a new med I want you to try, it is 5 meds in one pill. Okay, I took them. Then one day my husband I were in the car going across town and he had a bag of chocolate covered peanuts in his lap. Every minute or two his hand would rattle the bag and then crunching the peanuts in his mouth. It went on for a while when I raised my voice and said can't you stop eating those things. On top of that I had trouble with my eyes, went to the eye doctor, was told it was the pill and that cost me $50. Later I went to the pharmacy and asked what was in the pill.....hormones, sneaky doctor. I told the pharmacist the effect it had on me, he said, "then you don't need hormones, that is what happens to women who have to many hormones." My husband laughed over that little episode until he lost his memory. He knew that I never acted like that....See MoreWhat I have Learned About Using Crutches :)
Comments (13)I was on crutches for about 6 months with a broken hip and then a couple years later on them again for a few months after the followup surgery. Steps... I remember them well. Did you ever learn the railing way? One hand on the railing and use one crutch. On the commercial railings this was great. How often I thought I'd go tumbling when using both crutches.... Oh and getting on and off the school bus was a treat too. Nice HIGH steps! That was spooky. Last year when I took a fall and hurt my foot they wanted me to go on crutches for a week or so. Well, my crutches are in the rafters in the garage and getting to them would mean moving out the riding mower and the junk on top of it, then close the garage door, climb a step ladder and hope it was in the spot where the crutches were. I couldn't get myself to buy them when I have them. So I hobbled and "made do". I survived. And cursed having to go up and down steps to the bathroom....See MoreAlisande
