36' range or 30' cooktop with undercounter wall oven??
Comments (1)When we did our kitchen 17 years ago, we went for a cooktop with the oven underneath. We are planning to update the kitchen and the appliances shortly and we will be doing the same configuration. I looked at the Electrolux choices and have decided to go with Kenmore Elite. The main reason is that the Kenmore Elite oven has racks that you can leave in during the self-cleaning cycle. Having dealt with racks that were left a mess when left in or the hassle to clean them by hand isn't something that I want to do anymore. Comments (6)If you are worried about the safety of your boys cooking, have you considered induction? It heats the pan rather than the rangetop and clean up is very easily because nothing bakes on. Aside from that consideration, BlueStar would be a good choice if you can get service where you are. They have several options but I think you would benefit from the star burner. It is not capped as many are today so the flame goes straight up. Ring burners spread out more on high heat. The star disperses the burner ports more so more even heat if you like cast iron pans. The star burner has a burner tray that disassembles for cleaning. If you have a spill, it goes through to a tray below which you can cover with foil. If you don't like to have to clean the open burner tray they have a sealed, capped ring burner. Most that have the star burners think they are easy to clean. You will need a hood with the possibility of makeup air. One of the best things with a prostyle range is the extra depth front to back which allows more room for pans even with a 30". BS has the RCS with 15K BTUs or the RNB with 22K. https://www.ajmadison.com/b.php?Ntt=BlueStar+36 My preference would be a rangetop and wall ovens but I would get electric ovens. I like the oven at waist height and I can choose the oven for its own merits, one of which is faster preheat times. They can be a bit more of a challenge though because they are run by computer boards. If you like a gas oven, go with a BS range, the ovens are huge. To get an idea of usable space in an oven, look at the size of the rack. The BS holds a full commercial sheet(or 2 half sheets) side by side. Many ovens, even prostyle will not do this. The flip side is that it can take a lot longer to preheat. Many ovens with a convection fan lose space front to back, even if they sell it as a "flat back". The broiler is gas infrared rather than the blue flames so it is much hotter but smaller. I think just about all prostyle gas ranges have this type of broiler. Almost all ovens have areas that are hotter than other areas. Convection is a little oversold as the answer to this. When you have air movement, it creates drying of the surface of what you are cooking so promotes browning. Some convection ovens have too much airflow in one place so browning is accelerated in those areas. Comments (30)Sheloveslayouts' two designs are so much better. They put the counter space where it's truly useful. FYI islands are a great location for rice cookers and other small appliances that you store when not using. Heat and steam dissapate into the open air, instead of concentrating under your upper cabinets and damaging the cabinet bottoms. Your tea maker, toaster, and egg cooker should fit fine on the countertop to the right of the sink. With an island that wide, 24"-deep cabinets on each side, you will get a lot of storage. And it lengthens the dining room. You would have room to put a storage piece on the lower wall of the dining room. A sideboard, a large china hutch, or even a wall of cabinets that could give you a built-in look with storage and serving space....See MoreRange/Cooktop/Double wall oven advice!!
Comments (19)Hi Laura. I share your desire for 2 ovens. I bake a lot and have 2 wall ovens. No disrepect to your KD as they may possess many talents and redeeming qualities, but I would encourage you to go with your original instincts and select a cooktop and 2 wall ovens or one Double Wall oven. Remember also that ergonomics matter and if you use ovens often, you will appreciate having them (or at least one of them), at waist level vs. the ovens in a range. Speaking of ranges, I would strongly encourage you to delve deeper into Zline as a brand. There are lots of comments in the Discussioin boards here with folks who have buyer's remorse with that brand of appliances. While reliability is a solid question for most brands these days, ZLine presents the particular issue of lack of skilled servicers to make repairs. Note that all brands will likely, at some point during ownership, require servicing. Given how important cooking is to you, waiting for months to get anyone to look at your appliance when it is malfunctioning can really test a person's patience and sanity. (This is why selecting a mainstream brand or established luxury brand with service options is so crucial). If you should decide to go with a cooktop, you have lots of choices. With gas, you have dropin cooktops as well as Rangetops (like having a full range, but the top only). Should you go with Induction, you will still need good ventilation, but the MUA requirements will be lessened. Yes, you STILL NEED MUA in most instances depending on the CFM of your ventilation choices. But it might cost you a bit less depending on which cooktop you were to go with should you choose that route. A 48 in range is, like all other avenues in a Kitchen design, a choice with compromises. And in the end, if you should still end up with a range, I would suggest you seek out other brands and invest time in your Due Dilligence to ensure you have local servicers who can and will be at hand not only during the warranty period, but long after.
