Alternatives to grass? Backyard landscaping ideas needed
Comments (4)Sounds like a multi-purpose back yard. How about a parre terre (sp?) that has all your garden beds in raised planters and pavers/patio/cobbles around all that? The ones that are set up symmetrically look really neat and allow you to draw the visitor toward a focal point (swing, fountain or whatever). Kids can ride their big wheels, etc. and you can have mixed beds of edibles, foliage plants and flowers that don't get run over. You could do the whole back yard this way with no lawn at all! I did a similar thing once, with a circular knot garden (herbs) in the middle, and rotated veggie crops and flowers in 4 triangular corner gardens around a wood chip pathway. If there are any cats in your home (or neighborhood) I'd think twice about sand. What would be its purpose other than as a substitute for bark mulch?...See MoreCreative ideas for backyard area

Here's one that has a lot of ideas including a playhouse (my personal favorite as a child but it could be a fun kitchen for boys and girls) and various play equipment. Something to climb would definitely be fun. This one is in a small yard and utilizes mulch under a tree. Perhaps if you're keeping one of the trees, you could build a small play deck around it like this one. Likely grass won't grow under the tree, so a good way to use the space. Here's an interesting layout in that the swing and play equipment doesn't really have a footprint so it doesn't take up a lot of space. Here's another one that's interesting, it has swings like above but a climbing wall has been built. You could do that on your current wall if you can secure hand and foot grips well. Don't forget the sandbox. Here's a nice one where the sandbox becomes a feature of the yard plantings. This one has something for everyone! Regarding size of pool, that might be driven by local building codes regarding how close you can come to the property line. Anything narrow and long would be a good use of space. But if you can't fit that into the space, even a small pool the size of a hot tub would be fun to hang out in with the kids. Imagine this a just a regular pool in the corner of the yard. Or this Here's a really crude layout. The dimensions may be totally off but it provides the concept....See MoreWe need help with budget friendly ideas to fix sandy backyard area
Comments (9)I agree with Chris’ suggestion. I had to do some quick and cheap fix ups for an appraisal. The area around the utilitarian looking RV shelter over the parking pad made it look out of place and the grass around it just looked patchy and scruffy. My crew and I measured and marked the grassy area then used pegs and string to make a guide to dig around the concrete pad. I used cheap tarps from the hardware or dollar store and cut them to fit a 4 inch depth but you may want it deeper depending if the dogs want to dig. Dig up the area making sure the cuts I into the sod are straight — I used an edger tool (also one of my best investments for keeping things tidy) to cut along the string guide lines. Lay the tarps down and contact a local gravel yard directly because they are usually cheapest. They may be able to deliver but they will also help calculate how much you’ll need. You’ll measure depth x width x length for yardage of gravel but get Chris’ recommendation 3/4” is nice and easy on the pups paws. Once its down you can rake it into the area and it’s going to be awesome until you afford to get pavers or concrete or bricks. Good luck…PS also think about a covered porch on a larger landing so you have a good resting area for when the dogs and people come in from outside fun....See MorePatricia Colwell Consulting
