Most around here, including me, will try to encourage people to avoid "scotts" grass seed mixes. They are far from being good by any means. I was trying to find the % of the Sun & Shade you quoted and all I could find is this.. "Scotts Select Turf "Sun and Shade" (50% Boreal creeping red fescue, 35% Ragnar II perennial ryegrass, 15% Alene Kentucky bluegrass). Boreal is a fancy name for common creeping red fescue. Although it is adapted to shady growing conditions, Boral has none of the bred-in advantages of improved fine fescue varieties. Ragnar II, like all perennial ryegrasses, has no shade tolerance. Alene is a common type bluegrass that ranks at the bottom of the NTEP trials." A further explanation of my statement above. 6-8 hours of sun is the standard for "Full sun", against the misconception of full sun truly being sun all day long. You could really use any of the three cool season grasses and do not need the fine fescues. However, like I said before, any of the newer varieties are not going to visually blend well if you have an old wide blade fescue. ..I also didn't mention the different growing rates if you are to put a KBG or RYE on the fescue. A few days after cutting, it will look uneven. Ultimately the best thing to do would be to kill of the whole thing and start over (assuming you do have an old course tall fescue), but if your really against that, I'd say to overseed it with a turf type fescue. Go to a local garden center for better seed.

K31 is incredibly durable stuff, which is why it's used. On the up side, not much kills it. On the down side, not much kills it. Treatment conditions that would take it out would absolutely destroy your KBG. Certainty herbicide can take out K31 while at-least-mostly sparing your KBG, but the application rates are touchy and you're still going to damage your bluegrass. Other than that, painting or spot-spraying with glyphosate/Round Up is the only other option I'm familiar with that I know works. Then reseed with KBG (or encourage it to spread) in late summer.

Its Tall fescue, and it would actually make a nice lawn if it was re-seeded with more tttf..... Its kind of "hit and miss" with seed from big box stores. Stay away from Scotts, Vigoro, Pennington and Lowe's brand -(Sta-green) Most products by Barenbrug are pretty good - including their tttf blend- 'Water Saver'........which is available at some retail outlets. Barenbrug does sell some cheap , common type grasses, but its obvious and out front. The other brands mentioned - hide sub par types in their blends , and you can't tell until the lawn is established , and you start noticing weedy off type grasses in your lawn.

Thanks, @rifis (zone 6b-7a NJ), I appreciate the input! I have an appointment with the local coop extension to bring them samples, and they'll help me be 100% sure that I'm doing the right thing. But it would be a HUGE load off to find out that the grass I at least kind of like is the K31 that I still have 50lbs of! LOL If it is, then at the very least I'm hoping that I could sow a different type of tall fescue next year to fill in between the K31 bunches? A lot of my lawn was that tall stuff with seeds on top (that "polar opposite of K31"), and another big section was a blend of crab grass and what may have been bermuda grass, but it all dies away over the winter so what looks green during spring and summer just becomes a mud pit in the winter. So really, anything is going to be better than that. I'm just a bit concerned about your weed pulling. If you don't use preemergents this fall and in the spring and you don't do anything different then all those weeds will simply come back. @danielj_2009, I've been working a trowel about 1-2" into the soil to get them up by the roots as much as possible. Them already having seeds scares me, though :-O My original plan was to pull until Sept 30, then spread corn meal gluten, then sow new grass mid- to late-October. But the temperature threw me a curve ball! So now I guess the plan is to continue digging it up as fast as I can, then sow new grass, then go back to using CMG monthly starting in April or so. Then in August, I might stop mowing to let everything come up, so that by September I can see what's not like the others and hand-pull again. Thoughts?
