White Wash beams over ?Polyurethane? coat?

Hello,

We have some ole dimensional hemlock beams in our house that are 30+ years old. The finish on them has turned - well, orange. It bothers me especially since our color palette of our home is on the cool side.

They seem to have some very thin type of very hard polyurethane or varnish on them. They are rough-cut and NOT smooth - the milling marks are clearly visible in the wood, and I'd like to try and preserve that texture so belt sanding them wouldn't be my first solution.

But could I do a latex whitewash over top of this existing "finish" or would I need to use paint stripper on them first?

Thanks in advance!!
