Conifers Hudson Valley Upstate New York

zone 5 juniper question

Hi, hope someone can help me. We are in zone 5 and need to get a privacy hedge. We want to steer away from something that gets too tall and wide. But most importantly, we need something deer resistant and hardy. Trying to pick between hetzii columnar juniper, spartan juniper and blue point juniper. Please advise. Thank you in advance!

conifers are trees ... and as trees ... they never really stop growing ... most size estimates in the literature.. is at 10 years for conifers .. and you can presume at 20 ... they will be twice as big ...

the trick is.. if you want things to remain small for a longer period ... to get things with lower annual growth rates ...

the downside to that is that they take longer to grow that privacy you want ... its the typical catch 22 we address in this regard all the time ...

juniper has its own set of problems ... i would suggest that you do not plant all of one kind of plant... dont go all juniper ....

you didnt mention full or part sun.. nor any soil issues ....

btw... snow load can be an issue on some of these ... especially ice storms ... the plants can splay ...

Hi ken, thanks for the information. i am new here 😃 Regarding size I am looking for less than 20’ in height and less than 10’ in width. The trees would be in full sun and the soil has good drainage so not soggy. If not plant all junipers in a row, do you mix it up with other conifers?

Always keep at least one basjoo inside as insurance for the six years I've grown basjoo. I bring mine in my classroom, set it under the normal flourescent ceiling lights, and it always does fine. Pretty tough, although mine have a little more spce between each new leaf, whereas outside they come in closer together. For mite I use soap spray or windex. I've even used the spray you use to clean dry erase boards which is mostly water and alcohol. I haven't had one left in the ground for two years now after rotting my 'big momma' so this year I've put them everywhere since I had so many new pups on my potted one. I'm going to cover a couple, but the others I'm not going to touch... just to see how they do. I'm even going to plant one at my school this spring for the kids to enjoy. Chris

If it seems you are stuck with shrub varieties you are not wild about you can still make the planting interesting by using an attractive layout. Lining the front of your house does not sound very exciting. And if you do not have a geometrically symmetric house facade then you should avoid straight lines and other geometry in your plantings, as these will not coordinate with the style of the house. Note also that shrubs keep growing indefinitely, you will not be able to plant anything that grows up to window height for instance and then stops there, on its own. If you then undertake annual shearing to control size that will produce a stiff and formal effect - a row of balls or cubes going along the front of your house will not fit at all unless the house facade is also as uniform.

If your prevailing wind is from the shore, then I'd say any time would be good. If your prevailing wind is from New Hampshire, then I'd wait until the end of this month. Earlier is better as long as you don't have temps in the 90s day after day.

I also have an irrigation system and when the Kentucky bluegrass lawn is watered, these plants get watered as well. I usually water late in the afternoon, early evening, or at night. ==>>> you can not waer deeply.. into the root mss by relying on lawn irrigation .. as lawn roots are not as deep as shrub roots ... i also would not be wetting foliage every dy. especially when nights and mornings are so dewy ... if it were me.. i would remove them from lawn spraying ... and i would insure proper watering by digging some small holes.. and FINDING OUT ABOUT MOISTURE at depth ... i would also suggest a soil test to determine pH and then adjust such accordingly with soil amendments .. and not rely on fertilizer for such ... imo .. once the pH is proper... well established shrubs most likely will not need any further fert ... it takes a year or two.. or proper watering.. to get a shrub fully established ... perhaps it is a sign.. that the recently planted shrub is struggling ... lack of proper water.. will lead to leaf damage ... which then can cause other problems... but unless you solve the base or primary issue.. then attacking secondary issues.. wont help ... ken
