Netflix is beginning to bug me........

I've been doing a lot of streaming these past few week and was in the middle of Father Brown on Netflix when all of a sudden it stopped loading! And couldn't be relocated. Come to find out that it has been cancelled as a Netflix offering, together with a lot of other BBC generated content.

I also stream Acorn and Britbox and apparently they will be the streaming destination for most BBC productions now, not Netflix. But it could be awhile before Father Brown and the gang reappear.

I find Netflix difficult to navigate as well. There is a search function on the TV but not on my laptop. And no notice of departing shows or new arrivals, like Acorn and BB provide. Also no opportunity to sort by A-Z titles, which the other services offer. And frankly, there is just too much junk on Netflix that I wouldn't bother watching ever and that seems to clog up my home screen, making it even more difficult to find shows I would like and want to watch.

But I am reluctant to give it up completely at this time, as TV watching or streaming in this time of self isolation is a happily distracting pastime.

It's a bit of a conundrum :-)

I have been waiting for over a year for netflix to have a show I want. They now say it will be 2021, I say to h+++ with them.

ETA: That is the show Lucifer, LOL>

Anytime I see a news article about upcoming shows for the month on Netflix, there are Zero shows that I want to watch.

SVBs do attack gourds, although it seems like gourds are not necessarily their favorite thing. Sometimes they kill mine and sometimes they don't. They seem to bother decorative warted gourds more than they bother birdhouse gourds. The nice thing about catnip is you only have to plant it once. After that, it will reseed itself everywhere. I always let mine bloom its head off because the flowers attract beneficial insects. Catmint is another great companion plant for squash and other plants. I have "Walker's Low" catmint growing near my squash. Amy, Gently rub a leaf of your catnip-looking plant between your fingers and see if you pick up a catnip aroma. Their scent is present from a pretty early age. I think I have lost one Seminole plant one year, and I never checked it to see if it was SVBs that got it or if it was bacterial wilt or something similar. The other Seminole plants just filled in the area where the deceased plant had been growing and within a couple of weeks, it was so well filled-in that no one but I knew that a plant had died there in that row. In a good year, Seminole runs 30-40' across my garden and I let it do as it pleases because it grows in conditions, and under pest pressure, that nothing else can and will tolerate, except for other C. moschata winter squash. This year I planted both the regular fruited Seminole and the ones with the larger fruit. In the past, I've only grown the regular one. C. moschatas are as close to being SVB-proof as anything else I've ever grown. Squash bugs and squash vine borers are a big problem roughly 8 years out of 10 for everything except the C. moschata types. Over the years, I basically dropped all the C. pepo and C. maxima types of pumpkins, replacing them with C. moschata types. I just got tired of fighting the SVBs every year, so figured I'd work smarter instead of working harder, and replaced them with C. moschatas that deter the SVBs for me. Dawn

Happy to share I didnt share the mato!!Lol. I felt a little evil keeping it all to myself but as you say, no body helped grow it!!!!I pulled my first better boy hybrid today that has "blushed" a few days on the kitchen counter to see if it darkens will do. More tomatoes are making the change since seeing how happy I am, I know they just want to please me!! Looks like for me It has begun!!!

Most of the negative news about Netflix has been related to their apparent lack of understanding of their customer base. Which customers need physical media and which customers have the connection speed required for streaming - especially at HD levels - and then how it fits into their business model. Yep, they really screwed up and lost a lot of confidence on the business and investor level. The availability window for releases is between the studios and content providers - and it's getting ugly. Used to be the order was: theatrical release, airline inflight entertainment, hotel in-room movies, home video (DVD-VHS), PPV cable, and finally broadcast television. So, this is where it gets bad for Netflix, Amazon, Vudu, and others - how much are they willing to pay to get content sooner? That's the business side of the problem. The delivery side is, if you connection can accommodate streaming, is at what speed? Which also dictates the resolution and the MPEG compression level. I work on designing this technology and equipment for a living, but there is no "one size fits all" solution. Both physical media and streaming media will be around for a long time. There currently is not enough bandwidth available to stream all this information.

I was pretty peeved to have the service I get (3 cd's plus streaming) increase in price by 20% in one fell swoop. This was after an increase once already this year. I understand that Netflix has to raise revenue in order to maintain profit while building their streaming library and that it is their intention to steer the business toward electronic delivery, which has lower and much more forecastable costs. They are alienating a lot of customers with this move, but it is calculated - they are doing it because they can and they can because there's really not another true competitor. This move will be discusses in MBS classes for years to come. We have not decided what to do, we have discussed several options, including cancellation and going ahead a paying the $24/mo.

Searching Netflix through the app is pretty easy. Put things on your ‘watch list’ and view them anywhere.

Netflix site on your laptop has search features at top left corner. For example, if you choose Movies, a drop down box appears for you to select genres. Same for TV Shows, Latest, My List.

New Arrivals are listed under "Latest"

Michael, that is a very inefficient search method compared to what is offered by other streaming services ;-) Part of the issue is there is just so much in their inventory - most of it not worth watching IMO - you easily get bogged down looking for shows you might like. Why can't they do a simple A-Z?

I get Netflix as part of my cable package so it appears both on my TV and on my computer so I don't need another app to access. They just need to clean up and streamline their presentation.

btw, once you watch something on 'My List', why doesn't it drop off like it does with similar features on other services?

I have no trouble with Netflix but like jasdip rarely see anything which interests me. It all seems too odd, or too violent. I am enjoying PBS Masterpiece programs for the time being (Grantchester now).

just a tip.... If your Netflix ever goes out or you have a black screen, unplug your TV and it will reset it. This will work in some situations.

We joined Netflix two separate times, then dropped it once the program we want to see ended. I don't remember what the first one was; most recent was "The Crown". Each time we look through the offerings and it's, "Saw that decades ago," or "People actually *watch* that?"

We are also running out of stuff to watch on netflix and acorn. Getting ready to sign back up for Britbox, they seem to have some new shows to watch. From what I've read, movie and series productions have been shut down so we probably won't get anything new until 2021/22.

We much enjoy the Netflix interface over BritBox. My wife likes the fact that she's able to pick back up where she left off and not go back to the start of the series and find the next episode. We're about to finish up on BritBox and start an Acorn TV subscription next month.

I'm not big on subscribing to services that I don't use.

btw, once you watch something on 'My List', why doesn't it drop off like it does with similar features on other services?

I've never used another streaming service, but find it easy enough to delete from My List.

Funny how we all have different impressions of the same things :-) I would give up Netflix long before I gave up BritBox or Acorn. They may have less content than Netflix but the choices are far superior! Even their "dumb" shows are better than most of what Netflix offers. And now that the BBC has pulled all their programming from Netflix, I am even less inclined to watch. But probably won't give it up altogether. They do have a few series worth watching and some films but it's a pain wading through the 80% of cr*p for the puny 20% of shows I would consider watching.

Both BB and Acorn add new shows and new episodes for some existing shows on a weekly basis. And send me an email previewing what's coming. I like that!
