Rental Car damage that I didn't cause... how weird is this?
Comments (23)I missed the spam, as I am just now reading this. Kevin used to work for a rental car agency, and so he knows all the ins and outs. He had the job in Austin, and it made it easy for him to move here and transfer his job at the same time. I had him quit that job as soon as I was able to cover both of our expenses so that he could get something different. On Maui, we bought the total coverage insurance from the company, and it was not that expensive. One of the guide books we had said that there were hostile natives on certain parts of the island, and so we didn't want to be bothered with worrying about parking in a sketchy parking lot. Plus, we were used to Venice Beach and were aware of all the incidents that happen there. Nothing happened on Maui, however. I made a claim on my insurance a few years ago, and my rates did not go up at all, and they are extremely low because my car is not worth anything. I pay less than $200 a year to State Farm for car insurance, and that includes coverage for damage from uninsured drivers. In California, insurance companies cannot raise your rates if you make a claim for this type of coverage, but in my case, I had run into someone's bumper and did a small amount of damage. We take pictures of cars that we rent, but have not had issues. If we did, I would probably make a scene, something short of throwing keys into a cornfield, however. I also would not hesitate to allow my insurance to handle it. If you have not made a claim in a long time, you do not have much worry from rates going up. Lars...See MoreWell, I didn't listen...
Comments (11)Funny you mention that. I have a patient who's much younger than her DH, also, and his kids weren't always the nicest to her - but when the skids had their own children, SM took the place of their own mother. She said, "I guess they figure it's been over 30 years since their mom had a baby, and only a few for me, so I'm the want they want advice from and to watch their babies..." But, I could totally see them saying, "Dana, Daddy's going to take us all out to a nice dinner - but that restaurant isn't right for the babies, so we'll be dropping them off for some stepg-ma time w/ you for a few hours!" and expecting me to throw a party and enjoy it all... In our situation, BM has told the girls she's moving back to CA when she retires in a couple of years. That's another odd move if it happens. I mean, the girls have been gone in college for years, finally move back here, so you want to move to the other side of the country? Weird. I'm afraid I'll be the MIL from he!! who moves in next door to my boys and their wives....lol. Right now, I'm dreading any 'marriage' situation w/ the SDs. The 22 y.o. who's living w/ the bf is my worry. I love the bf (more than her by far), but I want to somehow work into a conversation that today, when you wait til you're settled to marry, you can have any type of wedding you want 'cause you can foot your own bill! Hint, hint, lol. I'm not opposed to doing something for her, should we ever have $ again, but I'm envisioning the princess for a day/weekend type of event that DH will suggest we sell the house for...and, I actually do believe in the days of the distant past, the bride's family DID foot the bill as their DDs needed to be taken care of, had no careers, and married in their teens. I married at 33 and made more than my parents combined, so there was no way I was having them pay for our wedding which was kind of large to include many of our colleagues, etc. Anyway, keep your fingers crossed for me that there is no upcoming engagement... Comments (18)Well, I just got off the phone with Swiss Colony again because I was concerned about how their food items were sent to guarantee freshness. She said food packages are sent in refrigerated trucks and besides that the cheesecake is packed so that all the air is drawn out(something like that)and it certainly can sit in a Post Office for one day. In fact, the method of packaging is so that in case a person were to forget and lay it aside for 48hrs.(or more) it still isn't going to spoil unless it's sitting in 107 degree temps. Now, she didn't say what the cheesecake will actually look like when I open it, but I'm not too worried....See MoreMiddletown: I didn't vote for Trump, BUT
Comments (227)I can understand folks who have conservative politics and different ideologies about a whole vast array of things. But when I see folks disregarding the Constitution and even arguing that it is an unnecessary burden to be pushed aside for their personal benefit, or "it doesn't apply", well that's the moral problem I have. If you won't even CONSIDER a Supreme Court nomination by another party, and want to wait out the election until you have the votes, well why would we ever, ever even need a Supreme Court? The Democrats could just as easily say they won't confirm a Supreme Court judge until after the next election, and ad nauseum. And the idea that Supreme Court judges are purely political and don't have to abide by precedent and the Constitution, that it is just "us against them and whomever has the votes of the moment wins" is an anathema to what the US is supposed to be, a republic where laws and principles are supposed to govern. Sorry, but if you are a "rules don't need to apply to me" person of any ilk, I would find you dangerous. Also, I have looked into HC's "crimes" and they are just petty political stuff, any other candidate has done similar things or even DT's crimes, just don't stick to him, and yet some petty mishandling of e-mail is such a huge crime as to equate her with Anthony Weiner? Yes, folks in Libya were killed at the US embassy. NOT the first time US citizens working for the Army administration or State Department have been killed in the line of duty, and yet I haven't seen other Secretaries of State pilloried for that kind of thing, nor directors of the Army, etc. I just don't think this kind of extremism in our society in general (yes I know DT's supporters aren't the only ones doing it) is going to bode well for us in the long run to solve the kinds of serious problems we have with our economy. And I haven't heard any really good suggestions from either party on that. The old ways won't work. Divide and conquer is one way to rule, but it isn't the only way. Edited to add that I work in academia and if you think it is all hearts and flowers among colleagues, no matter what their political persuasion, guess again. Academics tend to be critical of each other because they get paid to be the smartest person in the room. So imagine a group of them in a meeting . . . If you can't get used to that kind of atmosphere, you probably won't last in academia, no matter what institution you work for. Some places are less acrimonious than others. But "spirited debate" of various viewpoints is the bread and butter of academic life....See MoreWinnie C
