Besides Aleya, I've ordered from this nursery, 'great prices,' a woman from Malaysia, a seller in Thailand who happened to be related to 'don't want to say,' one of the other Thailand sellers I've ordered from half a dozen times and China..All have decent prices, and by using a different shipping method, I've never, ever paid 30.00-35.00 for shipping..I've only paid for the Phyto once: $5.00 USD. Han, I've been on Flickr from the beginning..Flickr was original owned by Yahoo, but supposedly, Yahoo sold to Flickr. Anyway, to this day, the only thing I know how to do on Flickr is post pictures..lol.. Other Flickr members have sent emails about my plants, or just to talk, and others asking permission to use one of my plant pictures. To this day, other than posting pictures, I don't know anything about Flickr..lol.. What's its purpose??? Thanks, I will check Nature's Asset's plants, but can't now because I'm going visiting in a couple hours and still have much to do before leaving. So, here I sit on the puter..lol. Han, several years ago, I made up a home-made insecticide..No chemcials. Here's a list of Ingredients. Mites.. I mix: 16 oz spray bottle Water 2-4 drops dish soap..'not Dawn.' 1 clove finely chopped garlic. The juice works best. Citrus rind or juice. Lemon or lime. Hot Pepper..the hotter the better. Cayenne works okay. Listerine, mouth wash. 1/4 teas. Add water in sprayer, then remaining ingredients the night before you plan on spraying. Shake spray bottle thoroughly before use. Spraying every other week keeps bugs at bay. Scale: Although Fish Emulsion is primarily used as an organic fertilizer, it also prevents and kills Scale. Believe me, I saved my Olive Tree by spraying with 1 cap of Fish Emulsion and water, in a 16oz sprayer. Before bringing plants indoors in autumn, I spray with all the ingredients above, including Fish Emulsion..It works as a preventative and, since I don't fertilizer during winter, a last feeding. Han, last winter, like most other winters, I feel down, and forget to spray with my mix, but before last winter, I've sprayed religiously, and never had plant bugs. This last winter, my plants contracted Mealy..the one bug I cannot rid. They attacked my African Violets and Scale. Since I can't find an organic solution to kill these creatures from hell, I ended up tossing most AV's and a few Clivias..I did spray with Rubbing Alcohol, but with some plants, too late. But when I sprayed every other week, my plants were w/o insects. BTW, if you decide to try this mix..if you add FE, discard leftovers..However, if you use the first recepie, it won't spoil, can be used days later. Please give it a try. There's nothing in my insecticide that will harm your plants, so what have you got to lose? I don't like using chemicals, mainly since I have birds..I dont want them breathing the fumes or, if by chance one flys out of the room and lands on a plant that was sprayed w/a chemical, it can kill the bird. Besides, I just don't like handling chemicals. Yuck,. Good luck, Hans. PS. Have you checked Anthuriums in HI? I know what you mean when you said, while visiting Thailand plants were 3.00..lol..Did you have problems bringing a plant on the plane? How does it work? Once I find the second seller's name, I'll send it to you. His site doesn't list most plants available, so you'll have to email him and ask about Anthuriums or plants you'd like to have.

Hi I keep most of my tropical plants in the shadehouse where there are so many kinds and growth habits insect control is almost out of the question lol. The slugs chomp down a leaf or two but the plant way outgrows the damage lol. I like to refer to this as my "rainforest in a box " lol Wife calls it an "overgrown tangled mess" lol If something has too many problems .I just plant something else. With anthurium the damage is always limited . gary

I think your initial hunch is correct. Based on the ratio of potting soil to peat, I would guess that your soil is a bit too water retentive. Peat tends to hold lots of moisture. There are some much better soil mixes recommended on this forum, but perhaps in the meantime you could try 1/2 regular potting mix and 1/2 perlite. You'll get faster drainage, and you'll be able to flush the soil with a large amount of water in order to remove salt buildup without the concern about over-watering. Watering twice a week lightly is a recipe for problems. **Keep in mind that you'll need to change this soil out probably annually, as run-of-the-mill potting soil can compact over time like cement (personal experience). You can keep the same pot as long as there are drain holes. Tilt the pot each time you water to remove any excess water. This style of pot is prone to puddling near the drain holes, and while attractive looking, I am not a huge fan. I'm no anthurium expert, either, but you might want to do a search to find out whether you should water when soil is completely dry or maybe a several inches down. Many tropical plants, like peace lilies, can wilt from lack of water and bounce back immediately with no ill effects . Over-watering is usually the killer.When you re-pot, take a look at the roots. If they are mushy and smelly, you've got rot. Sometimes you can cut off the rotted sections and start anew, but other times, you just have to toss the plant. Sorry for the length, and good luck. These are rainforest plants, they're used to getting their leaves wet. Occasionally, I'll even place mine in the shower and let it "rain" on them. Mainly just to clean the leaves off. Then I'll move it back to my room and let my ceiling fan run to help air it out. Don't worry about getting their leaves wet, that's not the issue here. My best guess it that it's soil is not getting flushed out when you water it. If the water drains very quickly, then it's probably running down the sides of the pot and not actually thru the soil. If that's the case, then I would place it in a slightly larger container and fill it up with water, right up to the soil line, and let it soak for an hour. After that, let the excess water drain away and then flush the soil out with fresh water until the runoff from the drainage holes begins to run clear. Then you just let that drain completely away before moving your plant back to wherever you keep it. This is what I do for mine every time I water them.
