That is very sad. It's going to be getting worse. I hope she pulls through and no one else gets infected.

I live 10minutes from the care home that is the Covid 19 epicenter for our province and my mom's assisted living facility is half a block away. It is scary.

The care home has 55 cases between staff and residents and of the 20 deaths in Canada half of them are from this specific home. This virus takes hold and just doesn't let go.

First death in my city was yesterday (Monday). She was just thirty years old, said to have had no previous health problems. Worked for the Red Cross.

We've have 4 deaths in Wisconsin, one was 90 yr old. There are many confirmed cases in Milwaukee Co and Dane Co (Madison). New cases appear every day. Its my thought that we don't know the true number of cases because there probably are a number of people waking around with a mild, un-detected infection. Our National Guard has been activated. Their medical personnel are shoring up places that have a shortage of medical professionals, notable nursing homes and a few hospitals in outlying locations.

Its eerie: The dining area in all restaurants and fast food establishments are closed. Those that remain open provide carry out only. Several grocery stores have installed a carry out service where one calls in his order and a short time later, it is available for pickup at the door. As I was leaving Sam's Club last Saturday, there were about 40 carry-out carts inside the exit area, waiting for pickup. The customer never enters the store; store employees wheel the carts out to your vehicle.

It's starting to get personal. A former neighbor of ours, someone we knew and talked to often, is on a ventilator. He's about our age, over 65.

That's all very sad, especially the 30 year old woman. Peace and comfort to all the families and loved ones.

My youngest will be 30 in a few days. I'm so sorry for that family--for all the families. My father is 83, and although I'm trying to keep him safe and healthy, I know he probably won't survive the pandemic (we'll have to stop isolating eventually), and realistically, he is at the end of his life. I might not survive the pandemic either, but right now I'm doing what I can, for the other 30 yr olds in this country.

Oh, mama goose, please don't think that. Do what you need to to stay safe, please.

Please mama goose, even if he has to isolate a little longer than others there is hope. A test for antibodies has just been realised and maybe soon these will be available so we can know who has been exposed and who needs a vaccine or to isolate or distance. Then those of us with antibodies can help with our serum people in critical care. Antibody serum is proving to be a powerful weapon against novel coronavirus.

DH and I (straddling 80) are similar to Yayagal. I have MM, so we decided to isolate three weeks ago, with DH making a foray for groceries every 7 - 10 days. He wears 'outdoors' shoes. He gets paper bags. I wipe things down as I remove them from a bag, then wipe the counter after the bag is removed to the garage. We 'park' our mail for half a day. No guests.

I have to go for chemo on Monday. I'll give blood and see my MD, then drive home and only return when my shot is ready. A major Chicago hospital opened its new branch only 10 minutes away in 2018 -- months before my MM diagnosis.

I expect this to be our routine for months. We're OK, with phones, computer, tablet, books. It's scarcely a 'hardship' so far.for us...so far, so good. Wwe are grateful to have one another, and, like Yayagal, we have always *laughed* a lot. Our DS and family are 25 minutes away, eager to help if we need them. (Hard not to worry about THEM!)

I wish you (us) all well. We attempted to order groceries online but there is so much demand, it was impossible. I made a foray to Trader Joe's yesterday and think they do a pretty good job of keeping people separated.

Mama G, Ill be 83 in August. I've been very careful, avoiding people, avoiding stores, keeping my house a "safe Zone" I will probably do it longer than they say because of the incident in our neighborhood. Truthfully, I'm just trying to hang in there until the "Malaria cocktail" is available to the elderly if needed. I have a friend who is 85 and has had COPD for many years. I had to argue with her profusely yesterday because she was going to go to Fresh Market and Food Lion today. Her husband is 95. I said are you CRAZY? You cannot go out of your house right now. Make a list and I will call it in and pick it up along with my order. Thank the good Lord she came to her senses. I've never done the call in order but I will learn and I'll feel better that I haven't come in contact with a lot of people. As long as there is nothing that has to be refrigerated, I'll leave the groceries in the car for a few hours. There are ways to get around this all and survive.

mama_goose: Don't fret unnecessarily about your 83 yr old father. If he's in good health, he has a good chance of survival. First, he may not contract the disease at all, and secondly, it is not 100% fatal. That's one of the problems: Some get the disease, recover and did not realize what it was. For those fortunate ones, it often gets passed off as an ordinary flu bug and they have the potential to pass it along.

This new virus has the potential to kill if it makes it to the lungs. If your body stops it before it progresses that far, the survival rate is good. In Wisconsin, we have hundreds of verified cases and 4 dead. One of those deaths was a 90 yr old man who was dying and in nursing home care when he contracted the virus.

I do not intend to downplay its seriousness; It is a serious disease due to its potential to kill, but I do not think it is as bad as the polio epidemic that swept through this country in the early 1950s. At that time, there was no polio vaccine. Many of those who survived were left with deformities or other weaknesses that persisted throughout their remaining life.

When the curve flattens, the numbers of people who never get exposed go way up. The deaths go way down. Masks, gloves,hand washing and distancing will make the difference.

I'm not afraid of the economic part. We can fix that part easier than we can kill this virus. It's only two cycles of the virus to get rid of it. Just 30 days.

Young people, this is your moment. Everybody under 50 stay home for a month and talk on social media .......... let 50 + people have the world and all the planes and trains ( kidding ). It's fun to think about though. I just wish we could take the scare out of this thing and give seniors some vacation instead. Enjoy life while the virus dies.
