Daily good news thread?

Olychick

last modified: 4 years ago

I wanted to post some local good news and know there have been some threads started previously, but they are hard to find. What do you all think of us starting a daily good news thread, featuring things in our (or any community we hear about)? It could be titled as Annie titles the other daily threads with the Date so we can keep track of them. I'm on the west coast and a late riser, so probably not the best person to volunteer to start it each day, but anyone who wants to could start one. What do you think?

Regardless, here are two news stories I saw locally, one about a tiny distillery in my county making and distributing hand sanitizer to those in highest need and the rest to anyone who shows up with a container:

https://www.theolympian.com/news/coronavirus/article241375856.html

The other was about a local furniture manufacturer who has retooled his workroom to crank out face masks - "So far, Kaas says his team of 50 full-timers has made more than 5,600 masks and close to 1,000 face shields in just two days. He expects another 150 volunteers to occupy the Mukilteo business shortly to kick things up a notch."

https://komonews.com/news/coronavirus/mukilteo-manufacturer-switches-from-making-couches-to-surgical-masks-to-help-hospitals

I'm sure many other stories could be shared from around the country to lift our spirits about the goodness of humanity.

Feathers, I was surprised by that as well; tho by all accounts that risk is very low, I was still surprised. I wanted to send some sort of snacks or treats to our local hospital and to my Mom's AL in another state; both provided details about what they'd accept and from where .... not home cooked.

Our governor (Elmer's too) never said said getting outside was a bad thing. Just not in groups or with other people without keeping distance. My grand kids participated n the chalk walk where they went for a walk and did sidewalk art and left messages for other to do Simon says type things. Simon says jump 3 times or skip or clap your hands. Things like that. They also rode their bikes and had a great time.

My bright side of today was seamlessly buying a new phone. I hate shopping. I broke mine last night. The young man who helped was great. Normally I would buy the phone online but I can't wait for shipping this time. He was super helpful, we changed my account to one that saves me money and he was knowledgeable and helped me out with a few glitches on my old phone. A ways into our interaction, I recognized him. He was the same guy who helped me get my first smart phone years ago.

Hi folks, I posted elsewhere - do not use Scott's "premium potting soil". Now I have read here that one should use MIX, not soil. I'm going to try to return it, even tho I didn't keep the receipt. Here is a link to find Pro-Mix near you. I am convinced by posters here about pro-mix, but will not drive 10 miles to get it, so will stay with Staygreen which I get at Lowes. On second thot maybe I will get Pro-mix and compare germination. I also will not buy any thing Miracle Gro, and did not know, until someone on here told me, that Scott's and Miracle gro are made by same company. ellen Here is a link that might be useful: Find Pro-Mix near you

Question About the Daily Recipe Threads

    Q

I've been posting this thread for over 2 years. That's over 700 recipes. As much as I'd like to have tried them all............there's no way. DH doesn't like half the stuff I do, so alot of them are recipes I'd love to try but can't. I usually mention the ones I do cook. For example, today I cooked the Shredded Brussel Sprouts again, but this time, used pistachios, instead of pine nuts. Not nearly as successful. But there you go. Sometimes they sound alot better in print than in reality. However, I'll still post recipes that I think are worth a try. Hope you don't mind.

The best part seems to be that the site allows for discussion of the work. Perhaps, just perhaps, I'll actually get Ulysses read. RSS is great for sites one reads regularly but not necessarily everything on it. It works something like the news aggregator one can set up on a "My Yahoo!" page, if you have that. Great for Blogs. One can set up an RSS to update regularly (15 minutes, daily, manually, whatever.) So one gets a page with a list of all the sites one wants to monitor, all the recent headlines from that site, and either part or all of the story. I use Sharpreader which was recommended by Slate, which has a good explanation. Which RSS Reader do you use, Martin and Russ? And how do you like it?

Thanks for all the info. Here is my two cents. Cast iron holds heat exceptionally well. And that is one of two reasons why I do not like to use it. When you want to shut it off and cool it, it does not respond quickly. It stays hot or stays cool. Stays. Second reason, it's too heavy. Hurts these aging hands. I find that other cookware works better. I use my cast iron for baking no knead breads. Lately, I bake no knead challah and no knead deli ryes. As long as the fans cheer on the ryes and challahs, I will appear to be an abin5er with no ego. Ha ha. Just say, with incredulity,. You made this? Lol. Lol

Feathers - your comments are valid and I'm sorry if my actions caused distress. Perhaps I should have given more details. DH has been in contact with the Chief since they scheduled 6 Red Cross blood in the coming weeks and as a retired Hem/Onc specialist DH has worked with them before. He checked with the Chief first and I did a drive-by leaving a crate of oranges and the box on the porch of the auxiliary.

Back to Daily Good News," DD2 did curbside pick up for dog food nearby, then came by our house to pick up a different sound machine for JC/3mths old. We got to see two of our three grandchildren, and DD2, in the flesh for the first time in 3 weeks. DGS had a cold before we started staying at home, so it's been awhile. FaceTime is great, but just not the same. FT with our other DGD last night.

Glad to see the majority of us are making the best out of a bad situation.

“Q. ... I want to send some of the floral art packs to someone in Tampa. I looked it up and for this time of year, Calla Lilies and Dahlias were recommended in that area... does anyone know if any of these floral art packs might grow this time of yr in Tampa? https://hudsonvalleyseed.com/collections/art-packs/Flowers

Calla Lilies and Dahlias???? hmmmm If they grow well here people must be hiding their gardens. I’m not the one to ask about your seed packets, black thumbs on these hands. It’s hot and dry already if that helps.

Thx, Maddie,....I googled and the most consistent answer for that area for this time of year was Zinnias.

I ended up just sending a bunch of art packs based on what was pretty. In FL, you can prob grow about anything if you have it in a container and move it around? She is an artist and I think she will love the packets. I never know what to get her and I just want to brighten her day. I've been sending these little random gifts to everyone and people really like a pleasant surprise these days. So far, I've sent the seeds, citrus, flowers, fancy hand soap, coloring books w fancy pencils, a baby veggie basket for a friend, Wikisticks for our snowbird neighbors w toddlers, their favorite wine for our weekend neighbors. Now I am looking at stocking stuffer type stuff for my kids. Who doesn't like a little random gift? I've been plying them w carbs too of course. Homemade tapioca pudding last night. Was it Bunny who likes it warm? Tried that for the first time, and don't think i will ever be patient again!

We are staying in and we live in a lovely area where most people have lots of room to go outside. I prefer my sunporch. Today I got a phone call from our local fish market. The owner knows me and said we are offering to deliver free haddock dinners with vegetables too. I told him I was thrilled and he asked if I knew anyone else that is in needing help in the neighborhood. I told him my neighbor, a retired state trooper, lives next door and cannot walk, is in a wheelchair and the next neighbor just lost her husband and is alone. I told him "mums the word" and he agreed. This will be fun.

You gotta stick with me to the end on this one...

I've had a crudier March than ever before. The worst. You may remember we were struck by the tornadoes that destroyed lives, homes, roads, my birthday. As we were recovering from that, our lives got turned upside down from COVID-19.

In between the two, one of my very dear friend's granddaughter was born with a very rare condition (boy in the bubble disease). They told her she had weeks to get a bone marrow transplant or she would die. The most beautiful baby I have ever seen! Truly. It was really devastating. They got her up to our work, and they've done genetic testing. It looks like medication her mother was taking caused the wrong diagnosis. still needs blood transfusions, but far easier to stomach. She no longer looks like she needs a bone marrow transplant, or has this condition. We are all so joyful! Can't wait to see this little girl playing!!!!

Maire & Mtn so glad you also discovered Hudson Valley Seed company-- I just think they are lovely gifts... and really a great company.

I ordered some fun seeds for my great nephew who is going bonkers being isolated (he's about to turn 4). Unfortunately, there is a delay in shipping-- not sure if it is because of seasonal volume or Covid-19 restrictions. Earlier this week I sent him more dinosaur excavation kits-- this time the much more challenging "big boy" sets. He completed the first one, including assembly, in 45 min (he had help with assembly from my niece.

For kid seeds, I ordered teddy bear sunflowers, polar bear zinnias, tiny tim tomatoes and tom thumb peas.

Michael, it might be time for some civil disobedience by Battelle and just provide the technology to the places needed. I think they started in Seattle and still have a facility there. Too bad they can't just make them in the states where they have a presence. Although in trying to check my memory about them (as a child growing up in Seattle) I see they are now part of the gov't.

Yep. I'm in a field that's encumbered by protocol (although nothing life-saving like Battelle Memorial). I'm going rogue to make adjustments. Mine won't harm anyone, so I'm coming up with my own workarounds in a sea of colleagues who are so inflexible I want to scream. I can't imagine what it's like at DeWine's level.

On another note, the sidewalk chalk art in my neighborhood continues to be amazing. Yesterday, I caught a few of them in the act as they were creating. I went into the street to keep my distance, and complimented them on their work. The youngest looked to be about 4, was still in his dinosaur pajamas, and proceeded to give me a guided illustration of what he was working on. I paused and listened, thanked him, and as I continued my walk, he skipped along the sidewalk, showing me his foot skills. It was delightful!

This scathing article made my day. The area is about 50 minutes south of me. These people thought they were sooo special that Coronavirus rules do not apply.

BOYNTON BEACH, FL (BocaNewsNow.com) — The Delray Dunes Golf and Country Club, apparently believing that Coronavirus won’t enter if it’s not a member, has decided to reopen its golf course.

In a letter to members obtained by BocaNewsNow.com, the directors claim that reporting of the Palm Beach County Executive Order is wrong, that the mandatory golf club closures don’t apply to private clubs, and that private golf clubs should be allowed to do what they want to do. There is no mention in the email if directors truly believe that Delray Dunes is immune from Coronavirus because it’s a private club — health officials so far have made no indication that a membership fee and monthly minimum food spend is a deterrent to a fatal virus.

Health experts do agree, however, that it’s about to get bad in South Florida, where apparently the Delray Dunes Board of Directors believes COVID-19 is no match for a round of golf.

The letter to members suggests that Palm Beach County officials will re-issue the executive order to clarify that private clubs can do whatever they want. While anything is possible, BocaNewsNow.com has received no indication that this is true. Intellectually, it seems absurd.

Also no word of what the Delray Dunes insurance policy looks like if members can trace their infection back to the club — or whether it could rise to the level of wrongful death.

Happy news? Yes! Our DD who is home for a week‘s vacation just got approved to spend another week here, counseling via her (office issued) laptop. She’ll use our study, which is private, and headphones. Her originally planned vacation to visit with some of her sorority sisters in Texas had to be canceled due to the CV, poor thing. Flunction, perhaps you are confused and didn’t read my first paragraph? Maybe give it another try to understand appropriateness. . I do think it’s good news. Why would you think I wouldn’t? Anyway, I tried to share good news on a good news thread. That club is being shamed for good reason. They thought because they were so very special that the rules did not apply to them. We all need to feel safe and that club will not getaway with thinking rules do not apply to them. This is good news to me.

Edited: we have a million golf clubs down here where people congregate. I’m happy that private golf clubs are not going to get away with mindlessly spreading this virus.

I found out about this today on my Instagram feed and think it's such a great idea. If you purchase a meal from this restaurant, they will send it to a NYC hospital for healthcare workers, either from their restaurant or from another that is helping out.. What a great way for them to stay in business while helping the front line workers.

I agree! Such a simple but wonderful idea that is a win-win for everyone. That's great that you posted it on your Nextdoor. I'm so inspired by so many people in NYC right now! Another group that has formed is called Invisible Hands. They will deliver groceries or prescriptions to anyone who is unable to get them themselves due to age or health issues. It is completely done by volunteers. I think they even offer a $30 subsidy for people low on money. And at 7 pm every night, everyone opens their windows and claps, blows horns, rings bells as a way to say thank you to all of the people who are helping us get through this; the healthcare workers, delivery people, shop workers, etc. Almost every day a local store closes for 24 hours so they can sanitize it due to an employee catching the virus. A few days ago it was a Trader Joe's, after that it was a Duane Reades. Each night the clapping gets louder than the night before as more and more people join in. It's something to see and hear.
