Wood Interior Doors: Solid Wood vs. Soild Core
Comments (5)If you are staining/finishing the doors, veneered doors have to be re-finished carefully. Once the finish is stripped, the veneer has to be carefully sanded so that you dont cut into the laminated layer beneath. Veneers are a series of laminated plys similar to ply wood w/ the last layer being the desired species. veneered doors can pull lose at the veneer, but is rare i would think. It all comes down to the quality and reputation of the door mfgr. Warpage on solid wood doors shouldn't be an issue if sealed/finished properly, but can happen, again, i would think it would be pretty rare for interior. As far as sound control, no advise there....See Morewood species for trim/doors
Comments (5)Thanks for the comments. Yes we are looking for stained trim, wood windows are pine and will be stained also. Started with poplar but worry about poplar for stain grade. Meant we can't get birch trim/doors, not sure we can get maple either. Being pushed to knotty alder for upgrade? We love alder but worried knotty will be too much, and clear is too pricy. It is a rustic/lodge style ranch home, however we are trying to keep the rustic finishes in balance so that it's tasteful but doesn't feel like a cabin. So while knotty alder probably would fit in, we worry the knotty may be too much, especially with the floors?...See MoreHelp! Mixing wood species in a mudroom
Comments (4)I think all wood in that small space will feel like living in a wood box I would look for colored locker type cabinets with the wood bench. Those lockers could even be metal and would replace the closet with sliding doors. What are you planning for the high cabinets and hooks /IMO best to have all the stuff in the lockers instead of hooks on the beadboard. Do you have kids maybe a bit more info would help too. One thing I like in a mud room is a sink so is that part of the plan . I don’t know aboutyour life but my parents had a sink and a shower in our mud room becuase my Dad came home many times too dirty to walk in the house so he showered there and my Mom would lay out clean clothes for him and the sink came in handy when he worked in the garage on some greasy yucky car or bike....See MoreWood species for painted cabinets-Don’t like maple, looks too perfect
Comments (16)About 95% of your concern sounds like coatings rather than wood. Products today are simply a little more plasticky looking. Generally, as coatings get a little more durable they get a lot more plasticky. There are ways to achieve solid durability while minimizing the plastic look. The easiest being adapting color coats and protecting with lower sheen topcoats. Another option is to brush on the color coat with a thicker product. This will leave the classic brushmarks in the paint. You could also pick woods with grains known to show through such as oaks, and use a clear sealer rather than pigmented sealer. There are many ways a good coatings person can achieve a good durable finish like you are asking for on most any wood. The problem will be finding that good coatings person. Cabinetmaking, even custom cabinetmaking, is a production type activity. You may find people who have incredible knowledge of coatings, but you may also find great cabinetmakers with little knowledge of coatings....See Moreletstrydiy
