From what I can see of your couch, it is a cooler tone of grey and it will conflict with a greige because it has warm tones. You want to look for something similar to Behr Classic Silver (used it in my living room and I love it). You will of course want to paint a sample to make sure.

As you can see by my photo, it is a cool, silvery gray, not too dark and not too light. I do have a Sterling Gray from Behr in my hallway upstairs and I will be using it in my small bathroom. As you can see, it goes with the painting by my mom on the wall along with my wall quilts!

I really love Repose gray SW color. You have to paint a swatch because the color on the card shows more beige then gray. It is a beautiful inbetween color!

what kind of light do you get? is it northern (bluer light)? or if it's a southern or western window, you'll get a brighter daylight.

I'd stay away from any blue/grays. on the wall they will look more blue.

try warmer grays that come from the brown/black end of the color wheel.

I did Light Pewter (BM) on my walls and it's a great shade of gray w/no blues

SW crushed ice is a nice soft, light gray

you don't have to do the walls in a gray just to match the sofa. you could do a multitude of other shades.

or, do a white and then come in w/some bold drapes, patterned rugs, pillows and artwork.

Gray walls, greige walls .....gray couch............honestly becoming SUCH a yawn for me. Why not something totally different? Even a navy blue? Against white trim, it's wonderful . Just remember you need decor beyond paint.

Trying to match any two near neutrals is VERY tricky. They change with the light and it's really hard to predict how they'll change.

I agree with Jan, too much gray is incredibly boring. I'd use a totally different, more saturated color, that is, one that looks more like a real color and has more contrast with your sofa (which is hard to see in your photos). Green and blue go great with gray. Or try a white background and add color with accessories--wall décor, pillows, vases, flowers, mirrors, etc.

Try sw accessible beige. It‘s a clean crisp greige that often works well with grays and tans.

Why not a color for crying out loud you have enough gray . I also think you need to think of all the other stuff going into the space before deciding wall color. What you do is get poster boards and choose 3 colors paint the boards 2 coats of each color and move boards around during all times of the day and night. Painting samples on a wall does not work. Make sure your lighting is in place also. I prefer 4000K LED bulbs to keep colors true and especially if you are working with grays. Have you though about a soft gray/ green if you still want light colored walls.

I see you have a purple throw on your sofa. You might consider a muted lavender, which goes great with gray and black. I have Touch of Gray (2116-60) on the walls of a guest room. It doesn't scream "purple" but has just enough color to work with the black and white bedding and gray pillows.

Sage green also goes well with gray--Saybrook Sage (HC 114), Sea Haze (2137-50) and Weekend Getaway (473) are all colors to consider.

A darker color would be dramatic and give a good contrast with the sofa. Some options are Templeton Gray (HC 161), Newburg Green (HC 158) or Van Courtland Blue (HC 145). All colors are from Ben Moore.

As a designer I usually go through the Ben Moore fan decks and select colors that I think will work in a space. Then I order large samples from the company and place them on the walls, view them in different lighting conditions (day/evening), and then select the one that works best. Obviously you don't have that option, but you might consider hiring a color consultant for an hour or two to help you choose if you really get stumped.

I would go with white instead gray.

There is way more to a room than picking a wall color that matches the sofa.

Monitors are fickle when it comes to showing true colors, as you know. I would like to see a green on the walls and warmer tones mixed in with the sofa. This particular green might work beautifully, as it presents as green, but gray is in the mix.

Beth H. There’s hardwood floors and a white fireplace ( brick and mantle) that’s about it as of now. Eventually I’ll hang the TV onthe wall and bring in color with Curtains and other items.

im usually fairly good at that part. I know grey ish walls are boring but I like the idea of the walls not being the focus so much and getting color like you said from other items. Someone mentioned blue earlier and I do like how they lookin the pictures but for me I like neutral walls, white trim and then add the color from rugs paintings candles etc.

color is so subjective and all the above ideas make sense to me it’s just a mater of not so much matching my couch but finding a buyer all color that works well. Maybe matching Greige with that couch is not going to work.

ill look at some of the color choices mentioned above see what looks good. Lots of people mentioned poster board for samples. im probably wrong so I’ll ask why not paint the samples on the wall? to me that would be a better representation as it’s on the wall. I’m probably missing something there.

thanks everyone for all the feed back. I wrote down basically all the colors mentioned and will go through the fan deck tonight to see what some may look like. I’ll end up buying samples tomorrow of a few I’m sure!

Anew Gray. It seems to be the best so far but I do t love it.

If you have a sofa in some color of gray and you want a near neutral (greige) for the wall then the wall color has to belong to the same hue family as the sofa.

Anew probably looks the best because it belongs to the same hue family neighborhood as the sofa.

The easiest way to determine the hue family for a sofa - or anything - is to measure it. And we do that with a Color Muse, can get it from Amazon for $60. Color experts usually have a more expensive device like a Spectro 1.

Once we have the data values, it's easy to find near neutral paint colors that align perfectly.

I hear you! You don't want a color, you want a neutral on your walls that will work well with your sofa. I have a collection of large color samples, but you probably don't. What I would do in your case is go to the BM store and pick up the 2"x 3" color samples that they have free for the taking. Pick up some of everything, even colors that you may think won't work. If you feel guilty for taking so many you can always take them back when you are done with this exercise.

Once you get your samples home take one of your sofa cushions outside - lay down a sheet or something over a table and set your sofa cushion on the table. You want the cushion to be in direct afternoon sun on a clear day. Get a sheet of plain white paper and set that down on your sofa cushion. Then lay 2 of your samples on the white paper. Step back and look at the color combination. Pick your favorite. Lay down another sample. Do this until you have limited the color samples to 3 to 5 samples that you think coordinate well with your sofa.

Remember that you have picked out colors that work together every day for most of your life when you pick what you are going to wear or what makeup you are going to use, what bow to place on a package.

The reason that I say to do this in direct afternoon sun on a clear day is that we do not have any artificial light source that works as well at rendering color as the sun. It will show you things you won't see in your home till after you have painted a large area, People may disagree with me, but every artist tries to use direct natural sunlight when they paint so that they can get the colors just right. When you take a painting into your home the colors still work together. They may look less vibrant or may look cooler or warmer because the lighting is cooler or warmer, but all the colors are changed in the same way by the lighting so they still work together. (You don't change outfits based on being outside or inside, you wear the same outfit all day and it doesn't suddenly clash when you go into your office. The opposite does sometimes happen. Great hair color until you get in the sunlight - it just turned green! Yikes!.

Once you have picked your 3-5 top contenders buy samples of your top 2 or 3. I don't actually recommend poster board, I recommend using 140 lb water color paper. You can buy 30 sheets for about $10. It works very well for painting samples, doesn't warp and has a similar texture to a painted wall. Tape the edges down before painting. Paint 2 coats. let it dry, remove the tape and you will have a narrow white boarder on the edge of your sample. If you want to paint an area of your wall paint it white, then hang your samples on the wall. Then move them to another wall, move them all around the room. live with them for a few days. Look at the color in the morning, afternoon and evening.

If one seems a bit too light or too dark or a bit too blue or green you can tweak your selection, but you will be close to that perfect combination.

But having lived in NE myself I think I might want something other than gray! A gray with a definite blue/green might be very lovely in this room. The sofa can go with a lot of different colors, you don’t have to match it. This one might be too sweet but not so bad.

Two ideas to try. SW Worldly Gray or SW Sea Salt.

Worldly Gray tends to be mysterious in that it can appear more gray (neutral) in some lighting circumstances and more beige in others. SW Sea Salt also is interesting and would be pretty with your sofa and would be easy to work with for window treatments, other furnishings and has calming feeling.

No way to say for sure how any of these will look in your space of course but it’s a starting point. The samples you have on the wall aren’t all that helpful I’m afraid; the original color is coming through because you only put on one coat! Put two coats on and then surround your sample with white paper. This will give you a better read on the actual color.

An easy solution would be -look at SW color palette collections. Compare your furnishings and accessories and find the collection that best reflects your belongings or planned belongings, and choose a light neutral within that palette for your walls. (test it too) For example, if you notice that the artwork you want to see has blues and greens, take a look at the Coastal Cool collection and pick a light neutral from it.
