Stairs vs. Hardwood Floor Matching (or not?)
Our home flooded and we need to redo the entire living room, dining room, kitchen, kitchen island and family room. The family room, living room and dining room all have a Jatoba Red Oak hardwood floor and the stairs going upstairs have the same tone but slighter darker, as does the banister(s).
I need to pick a new hardwood floor color (my appointment is tomorrow as the work kicks off on Monday) and I thought I was decided but I am now torn as the colors I want do not match my stairs.
Ive attached some photos of what the current color is and that of the stairs and the color I was hoping to have.
Im not looking to change the color of the stairs any time soon so that is not an option.
Do the stairs absolutely
need to match the hardwood and/or can it be off? Is this in at all or am I making things up in my head to make it work?
Please help!

Comments (7)My mother is 85 years old and has Parkinson's, so she has trouble getting around. I am keeping her in mind with your question. I would go with a low pile carpet, if you were my parent. It is softer for when she falls down. Mom has hardwood in her foyer, dining, and halls, and although they are beautiful, they are mostly covered with throw rugs, which are a tripping hazard, but less slippery for her. Because hardwood is pretty much a lifetime purchase, and unless yours is damaged in some way, you're probably not going to replace it. So, light wood vs. dark wood, wide planks vs. narrow planks -- that stuff's all going to come and go. With that in mind -- as well as the very real concerns about cleaning dark wood -- I'll vote for a nice, neutral midtone every time. Not too much contrast, not too red, and (unless it's a beach house) not too pale. Comments (5)IMO, no, it doesn’t have to match…as a matter of fact I might go even lighter. What I do consider important to make it work, is that the riser be white. however, you could pick a similar wood tone, maybe lighter than the stairs, and that would still work. It should be in the same color family which is why the first one looks off.another option if you really want to go a bit diff, would be to put a runner on the stairs. you'd cover up most of the wood. Or, you could paint the treads.
Or, if you really really want to change the color of the floors and the stairs are all that's holding you back, get new treads. not a big deal
what kind of furniture do you have? what's the style of the home? what's going to last and work for the family?

4 years agoHave you tried samples in your home? If not, you aren’t ready. This takes time and for this much investment you want to get it right. Because the redish woods are out of favor, it will be very hard to get close. Can your stair treads b sanded down and then put a medium wood tone stain like Provincial on stairs and find coordinating tone for floor.
