Time isolation of corn
Comments (10)I'll start with those two then. How'd you choose them? I've been searching for a guide to suggested varieties of heirloom vegetables for Florida, but haven't had much luck. MacCubbin and Stephens list some heirlooms for other vegetables, but not corn that I know of. I'm also interested in trying some of the open-pollinated heirloom sweet corns, but again since I can't find a guide for Florida I don't know where to start. Do you make meal out of these dent types? I keep reading in heirloom vegetable books that "old timers" like to eat dent corn in the milk stage roasted. (Seems like they always slip in that "Old timers.") Makes me wonder what it tastes like. Did the timing by height technique work out? Sorry to hear about the squirrels....See MoreHybridizers use isolation bags for pod parent?
Comments (7)I get lots of pods every year from flowers I haven't pollinated, so I don't think you can be too sure something else hasn't pollinated a bloom unless you take precautions. I have seen several hybridizers pull petals to keep bees from landing on flowers, and I've seen them also cap pistils on important crosses. I'm not that concerned, or my crosses are not that important yet, but I do get out early and do my hybridizing as soon as the pollen sacs fluff. If the flower shows signs that a bee has beat me to the flower, I will pass that flower up. Any pods that don't have a cross tag are disposed of. If I wasn't able to pollinate early in the morning, I think I would bag the flowers to prevent unwanted pollination, until I could get to them. I average about 4000 seeds per year. Comments (46)If this is new construction, are the windows not already manufactured with some type of ray blocking technology? We recently had our upper level deck stripped and the decking replaced. While the decking was off, the sun shone into the glass patio door on the floor below. I had never noticed how the light looked so differnet as it filtered through that glass door because the upper level deck had always prevented direct sunlight. The glow that it cast into the room was slightly harsh and greenish. This is an Anderson door and it has treated glass. Is your glass already treated to filter the rays of the sun? As an opinion about your shades----by all means, make them to blend with your walls as much as possible. Any shade that has color to it will reflect that color onto everything in the room, And, I feel quite certain that you do not want that....See MoreAfter 22 years if marriage, NOW he wants to make time for us?
Comments (4)Not me, but a friend from church many years ago said that she could not figure out how she ever managed to wash dishes, sweep floors, and cook without her husband's constant micromanagement. (Husband had just retired.) I think her situation did improve, but not on its own. She was very involved in a lot of neighborhood, community, and church activities. Ran the church nursery, volunteered at a nearby public elementary school, sewed for the public, and produced plays for the church! He did get involved with some of her Productions, but I think she also strongly pushed him to develop Hobbies. And no, you do not need to coddle him or be grateful to him for the sudden burst of attention. That behavior has a great deal to do with him and, I would guess, not a lot to do with you....See MoreMichael
