Do plantaginea grow true from seed?
Comments (14)Terri, I would like to know the same, as Ventricosa is the usual species that is said to grow true from seed. I have some OP seedlings growing from Plantaginea, and they look identical to the parent so far, but were too young to bloom last summer. I really hope they will bloom this summer. I'll post about it if I get blooms. I did find that I could go out in the night and pollinate Plantaginea with their own pollen and it takes very well. But by morning when the bees are doing it, it's less fertile. I think the flower is so big that the usual bumblebees may miss the mark most of the time also. The pods will mature in about 40 days, maybe 30, so you should be able to get good seed from them pretty easily. I failed completely in trying to cross any other type of hosta pollen onto Plantaginea even at night, however I have many pods and a few fragrant seedlings from using Plantaginea pollen. Salute x Plantaginea has bloomed and is fragrant and blue; Cinnamon Sticks x P is fragrant and green with red pets, Spritzer x p not bloomed yet, Green Fountain x P, Shining Tot x P are first year seedlings. Some of my seedlings from crosses with P were not fragrant, but it may be possible that a bee got to it and introduced other pollen. Dave...See MoreGrowing habs from saved seed - run true or not?
Comments (5)They were planted indoors in a glassed in terrace. The nights were still cold and they were near the windows so maybe not warm enough for them to germinate. We didn't use bottom heat. I guess if they didn't come up the seeds must have rotted. Will try again when it gets warmer with the saved seeds. Thanks!...See MoreDo Adenium grow true from seed?
Comments (1)It's an excellent question and one that should really be repeated once in a while. The short answer is no. The overall morphology is more strongly expressed in cultivars but the colors of the flowers is dramatically less predictable. The only person I know who have committed to an actual rate of success is Mr. Ko who said the odds are somewhere around 20 to 25 percent, even with careful hand-pollinating technique. In any case, even if you end up with 8 out of 10 seeds that do not bloom as advertised, that's still 8 plants you can play around with---grafting, root torture, splitting and doing the curly thing. The possibilities are endless. Pagan...See MoreDo tristar strawberries grow true from seed?
Comments (0)I've read that hybrid strawberries don't grow true from seed and you need a runner to propagate. Tristar strawberries are hybrids so I'm wondering if it holds true that its seeds won't grow true. Can someone confirm? Thanks. (Fyi, I posted the same question under Growing from Seed forum.)...See Moreponcirusguy6b452xx
