If you have a mantle, how do you decorate for the holidays?
Comments (2)I did a snowman theme last year and what I liked most about it, was that I could leave it up beyond Christmas. This year I used some artifical pines with pinecones, very delicate and a little gold glitter on the tips of some of the pine needles and just sat them randomly on top of the mantle with a burgundy wire ribbon intertwined throughout. There are 2 antique clocks on my mantle, so the pines are tucked around them, etc. I have our 4 stockings hung and 3 boyds bears christmas figures, they are very tall, so they stick up nicely out of the pine. I have had them for years and never use them, so it was time to use them or lose them....See MoreWhat are you holiday weekend plans?
Comments (17)Our family reunion is tomorrow. We plan on going and spending a fun day with family, those we see all the time and those we only see on this day. If we aren't too tired, we are going out dancing saturday night (I need a drink). Sunday is the big University of Kentucky and University of Louisville (this is where my daughter is currently enrolled) football game. Go Cards!!!. This is a big rivalry, a friend of ours is having a cookout/Texas hold 'em/watch the ball game/ all day event at his house-it is a great time. There will be lots of people there rooting for both teams, so it should be a lot of fun. Monday morning is our town's annual Labor Day Parade-our county fair has been going on this week, it ends Sunday with a horse show, and then monday the icing on the cake is the parade. After the parade we all gather at my house for burgers and dogs on the grill. I'm tired and happy just thinking about all the fun stuff planned for the weekend. Maybe next weekend we can have a nice quite time....See MoreHow do you decide who to spend the holidays with?
Comments (41)How do I decide: The nearest and best cook. Not really, just kidding. Much depends on distance. Both my parents and my wife's parents are gone, so that leaves us, our children, and siblings. My nearest family is my 2 sons who live within an 80 mile radius. We try to get them together with us for a dinner. Since everyone has their own lives, it is not always convenient to do this. We make the invite and they come if they can. Of course, we do try to find the best time for all of us. For example, my oldest son works at FedEx. They have entered their busy season which means his schedule will vary. During holidays, there is a shortage of help and overtime is available. When our parents were alive, we went to one of their homes if it was convenient. Distance was negative factor. While my kids were growing up, we had our Thanksgiving at our home. The parents were invited, but they always declined due to distance and onset of winter weather. Thanksgiving was a nice, but not critical holiday in our family. Christmas, that's a different story. Christmas was the big holiday for both of our parents. usually, its a longer period and it meant more than nay of the other holidays. We took our little kids to their grandparents on alternating years. My parents on even numbered years and her parents on odd number years. As we enter old age, Christmas has become a holiday mostly for the wife and me. Our kids are welcome, but if they have other interests, that's okay too. Twenty years ago, my family stopped the practice of getting everyone a gift. That had become burdensome for the members with little income to spare. Our get-togethers have developed into more meaningful endeavors than frantically chasing a mandatory gift exchange,...See MoreHow Far Ahead Do You Bake Your Pies for a Holiday?
Comments (41)Pies are made when the time allows. This year I didn't work Wednesday so that was pie day. If I had worked I may have started earlier and made one each night..When ever I make them they will be "FRESH"! Pie/cake dessert is FRESH until it's cut in to! hahahahah But then I am a do what can be done ahead kind a gal. Last week we baked a turkey--stuffed so my stuffing is done and my gravy fixings ready. The mashed potatoes casserole is done and frozen at least a week early. Cranberries--two kinds were made Monday. All there is to do today is the fresh fruit salad and DH will grill/smoke the turkey we will serve. The daughters are all bringing the rest--done before they got here earlier this week. I have soup and pulled pork done and waiting for the meals for the rest of the weekend. I made an egg bake and over night oats and a variety of sweet breads for breakfasts. My kitchen is too small, cooking is too messy and time consuming to do it while company is underfoot....See Moreplllog
