Did you use any of your home canned foods for holiday meals?
Comments (20)I was just here checking to see if anyone was still canning anything, since I canned beef broth today. I raised the heritage Blue Slate turkey that we had at Thanksgiving, along with the fingerling potatoes which store very well in the cellar. Pumpkin pie was made from home canned pumpkin and an appetizer of a savory cheesecake was topped with my Habanero Gold. Mulled cider from cider we pressed and I had in the freezer stayed warm in the crockpot. Christmas thumbprint cookies contained homecanned jam and the green beans were from my basement "store" and my stepson roasted another one of those turkeys. The guys all doused theirs with my home canned hot sauce. All the Christmas baking was done with eggs from the freezer too, and the pie was made with homecanned apple pie filling. Throughout the holidays we snacked on fresh tortilla chips and salsa that I had canned (Yes, I'm THAT Annie). Oh, I made the ricotta for the lemon ricotta pancakes too, as well as the yogurt. Enchiladas made with leftover turkey were topped with tomatillo sauce that I made and froze when the last of my tomatillos vines were threatened by frost. My kids are coming over tomorrow and we're having beef roulades, with the onions in the rolled beef coming from the root cellar and the beef from my barnyard, good organic grassfed beef, a Hereford/Highland cross. Sweet and sour kale from our bumper crop of greens this year, home canned green beans with bacon for the grandkids and the cheesecake will be topped with homecanned blueberry topping. Appetizers will be venison sausage and homemade liverwurst from that same grassfed beef, pickled beets and Linda Lou's 10 day sweet pickles So, yeah, I use a lot of my canned goods. Comments (42)Small town life sounds good to me. As does living in the country. We had a few acres when I had horses and other animals back in the 60s and 70's. Phoenix is soooo big, too much traffic, and I hate driving even if it didn't cause my leg to go on the warpath. I was born in a small town, in Ala. I don't really going places alone either, and won't go out at night except to family gatherings at one of my kids. I'm waiting the arrival of my toile plates I just bought. Tho heaven knows what I can find to do with them, but will try just because of all the support I've gotten here. Any table settings I do will be just for ONE, maybe two if you're lucky. LOL. I'm going to be a one-trick pony, sorry about that. I just can't do full tables for many reasons. I've been 'planning' my Christmas decor. Really planning this year. Thought it might take some of the load off me being so over-whelmed with it when I go to unpacking a zillion things in the middle of the floor while telling two cats NOT to help me. A zillion times! One sleepless night I started plotting different places to put things this year. I want my newly begun collection of Nutcrackers (started last year) pretty much together. But I think the purple one should go with the Santa. And I have two golf Santas and two golf Nutcrackers that should stay together. Last year they were with my two other special Nutcrackers, a policeman and a fireman. These have a lot of meaning! I'm going to put my Village in the antique china cabinet in my entry hall this time I think, instead of Painted Pony Cabinet in familyroom. Tho I still have to move over a 100 statues from BOTH. I was thinking of putting Xmas horses and reindeer in the pony cabinet. I have quite a few of both now. Anyway, its fun to mentally decorate. It also doesn't wear me out or hurt my body. LOL. I think I'll start my Village next week in fact. First I have to make room for all those dog statues to safely go on closet shelves for the next two months! Ugh. hugs, Karen...See MoreHow Far Ahead Do You Bake Your Pies for a Holiday?
Comments (41)Pies are made when the time allows. This year I didn't work Wednesday so that was pie day. If I had worked I may have started earlier and made one each night..When ever I make them they will be "FRESH"! Pie/cake dessert is FRESH until it's cut in to! hahahahah But then I am a do what can be done ahead kind a gal. Last week we baked a turkey--stuffed so my stuffing is done and my gravy fixings ready. The mashed potatoes casserole is done and frozen at least a week early. Cranberries--two kinds were made Monday. All there is to do today is the fresh fruit salad and DH will grill/smoke the turkey we will serve. The daughters are all bringing the rest--done before they got here earlier this week. I have soup and pulled pork done and waiting for the meals for the rest of the weekend. I made an egg bake and over night oats and a variety of sweet breads for breakfasts. My kitchen is too small, cooking is too messy and time consuming to do it while company is underfoot....See MoreHow do I get my house to smell nice 24/7?
Comments (58)Oakley, I’m glad you got your big dog odor taken care of. When I was reading your notes I thought that maybe you had retrievers. I used to have a lab and they and other working dogs of the retriever variety are likely to smell a bit doggy because of the oil in their coat. Yes it is important to keep up with vacuuming because they shed a lot. You’ll also want to keep your vacuum cleaner emptied because the oily doggy smell can make that reek Recirculate doggy odor, even if you have replaceable bags. The filter was some part of the apparatus gets dusty with dog fragrance. (We have an in-house vac, so the canister is in the garage, so not a problem.) If you have wool or similar fiber carpeting, this can become “doggy” because the oil from the retrievers get onto the fibers. We had friends with golden retrievers and they had large sisal carpets and their home did not smell of their dogs. They were good housekeepers but not fastidious. They were dog lovers and the guy was a duck hunter so his dogs were not roomed often. (With retriever, the oil on their skin that gets into their hair helps keep them warm and buoyant, I believe.) One thing I found that’s a nice fragrance is close. Somehow to scape day project and we’re apparently in my sewing room. It took me a while to figure out where the nice thing clothes smell was coming from until I spotted a few loose clothes. Now I replace them every now and then just a few and it gives a light variable fragrance To that room. As others have suggested, and you said you do this, refresh the air as often as possible by opening the doors and windows and letting a lot of sunlight come in. Be thankful your pups are rolling in rotted seaweed or lobster bait. Your dogs are beautiful!...See MoreLars/J. Robert Scott
