I really like these ideas! The medicine cabinet I want to keep. I really do use it and putting its contents - which are really small - in baskets would not work. There is no other open wall to move it to. I do have good - though mostly indirect - light for plants in this room. I took this photo at night, but if you look at the mirror on the left, you can see a reflection of the window, which is in a 1 foot deep box bay. There is also a skylight which is about 6 feet away. This room also has a tall ceiling, so even raised up on this boxy thing, I have room for a tree. Funny how I have never thought of that. It is winter here now, so I will probably have to wait on buying one, but I could start looking now for the tiered shelf. That stair one is really nice, and an interesting form for this square shape.

Bellsmom, We will not be wanting a table/chairs in the kitchen. A peninsula with bar stools will serve nicely for eating/homework etc while my husband or I are cooking. No kids yet, but in the near future after the kitchen and rest of the house gets done I imagine there will be a few ;) Dining room is more a formal style dining room for large gatherings. Just my husband and I doing the cooking. Groceries and trash will go out the back door I want to put on the remaining living room wall after the 24ft kitchen area. We dont do anything more than an average family would probably. We make dinner every night, but arent extravagant chefs by any means. No computer or tvs needed in the kitchen. Small appliance storage out of sight is a must for my large stand mixer, toaster, blender etc. I would also like to do a large vent hood over the range and not an over the range microwave. I like having my microwave at a more useable height, counter height is what I'm thinking. I will try and add some pictures of the mantles etc for style reference later. the plant is fine. ( he's a baby. it's not like he's going to fly out of his crib and munch down on it!. Sheesh who is worried about a plant? Sanitize? becuase of the cat? Unless you had the litter box in this room, You'll be fine. I had plants and multiple cats when my son was born. He's 28 now. no health issues. just sayin. I like the added texture in this room. the panel trim on the wall, and that light is cool I like the layered rugs. (no tripping hazard unless you're drunk while putting him in the crib! babies rarely learn to walk in their rooms. the rugs are fine)

The downside to roman shades is they're either up or down, there is no middle ground. They are attractive and would really block the view at night. You can get them in light filtering or blackout. If your windows aren't a standard size they can be expensive when custom. While wood slat blinds aren't as popular as they used to be, the wider ones would fit in your window and you can turn the vanes up or down to varying degrees and open them all the way if you want.
