And that bookshelf will be a tipping hazard very soon. If that is wall to wall I would not add another rug on top.

Great that the shelf is anchored. Yes move the plant out of the room. A rug will be a tripping hazard so no rug. Get colorful cushions for the nursing chair, also. Sad to say but the time a child needs a nursery goes by in the blink of an eye.

I get the feeling this is your first child - if so, you don’t realize how much STUFF a baby generates.

Here’s an example: when my oldest son had his first baby, my youngest son ran out and bought the biggest teddy bear he could find. Seriously. That bear was 4’ tall SITTING. Massive.

Bottom line is don’t fill the room now. It will fill itself later.

I don’t think you need anything in the empty corner. I think the plant in the other corner is really nice and I see no reason to remove it until your baby starts crawling.

Right now you are fine , That book shelf will need to go once he starts crawing since it will work like a step ladder , same for the plant . Not every space in a room needs to be filled just get the stuff you need right now and wait for anything else.

Why not angle the crib. As with others, you do not need to fill the space. As for the plant. I had them all over when my son was crawling. They were not even noticed because i guess they were just part of the scenery, lol. Bolt the ladder shelf to the wall so it doesnt tip over. Usually there are wall brace kits that are included with the furniture. Kids are kids, they will explore but you cant save them from everything. Just grow that third eye in the back of your head.

A colorful and playful area rug, maybe a round one with pattern, maybe colorblocked, leaves, flowers, not too juvenile that will take him down the road a bit is an interesting safe exploration tool as kids love to feel the texture and absorb the different colors and shapes in the rug. Once you actually use the room you will discover what you actually need. Then you might find the perfect spot for your small but comfortable chair. I found my son liked the white noise in the living room. Fell asleep like a baby. Anyway, the room looks good.

With a first child, it’s hard to imagine all the practical requirements, as it’s exciting to decorate. Keep space available for needs. For instance, a cart next to changing table.

A moses basket for the first few months is recommended.

Bins for toys and books (you’ll be reading in a few months and won’t be long before your child will want to crawl over/access).

A night light near the rocker (Ikea has an inexpensive wall cloud light), vs trying to find a surface for a lamp.

You can remove the cupboard doors and add organization. If you want to free up floor space, place changing table/shelving in there.

What about a woven, rattan hanging pendant light? Your current lighting looks quite harsh. When you are coming in for nighttime feedings/diaper changes, you aren't going to want to flip on those super-bright, cold-toned recessed lights. A low-wattage bulb in a shielded shade would provide nice gentle light as well as tie into your safari animal decals and add much needed warmth and texture to the room.

Practical and easy to keep clean would be my objectives. For my money, that would eliminate wicker and straw dust-catchers. Things that can easily be wiped down are high priority. Read up on what stimulates the newborn and incorporate some of your discoveries near the cot at the appropriate times in his development. IMO, don't buy clothes for him. You'll be inundated with little outfits once he arrives. All a baby needs for the first 6-12 months is diapers, T-shirts, onesies, little jumpsuit/PJs with feet, and bibs. If you live where it is cold in winter, maybe a cap or two, and comfy blankets, wraps and bath towels. Soft but good lighting and comfort for mom will be very important. Locating the rocker/nursing chair where you can see who comes to the door, and they can see and converse with you without entering is a good thing.

That's the perfect spot to hang a mobile from the ceiling for him to look at. Get one of those motorized ones that reflect shapes on the ceiling and wall.

I love the hanging "pet nets" for all the stuffed animals that little ones get as gifts, keeps them up and ready to love on!

Sanitize? becuase of the cat? Unless you had the litter box in this room, You'll be fine.

I had plants and multiple cats when my son was born. He's 28 now. no health issues. just sayin.

I like the layered rugs. (no tripping hazard unless you're drunk while putting him in the crib! babies rarely learn to walk in their rooms. the rugs are fine)

I'm with Beth here. I had a rug over carpet and a big plant in my daughter's room. Just make sure the rug is soft.

Agree you don't need as much as you think you will. But a comfy chair is nice, especially when they get around 6 months + bc then they can sit next to you to look at books, etc.

I started with a wicker basket and then a metal drink tub haha for toys. Sometimes she would dump them all out or just dig out a favorite.

I think you need some color in there for sure. Initially the black & white contrast is what babies see, but you can achieve that with other dark/light color combo. And color is good stimulation.

One bedding trick I learned that came in handy, was to layer 2-3 crib sheets/mattress protector, so when they puked, pooped, peed all over the sheet in the middle of the night (they will) you can just yank off the yucky layer and wala! a clean one all read for you! Nice & quick to go back to sleep. :)
