Remodeling Design Dilemma Kitchens

Need help choosing a quartz counter top, please!

I am remodeling my kitchen and am struggling to find a quartz counter top. I have chosen SW Agreeable Gray for the cabinet color (clean, simple shaker style) and I have oak hardwood floors in Gunstock finish throughout my house that are staying. I lean toward warm neutrals. In keeping timelessness at top of mind, I am trying to avoid many trends as well. My tastes are very clean and very simple. Layout includes a 10' island that flows with with the traffic flow of the space. Cannot decide if I want to got with a veining look for movement or stay more clean and simple. I want to brighten and simplify the space but I also don't want it to be boring/monotone either.

Have you taken your paint sample and floor finish sample to look at slabs? Have you gotten your fabricator to advise you on seaming as that may help determine how active or simple your selection could be?

Thynes! Thanks so much for giving me the exact name and number for your tile. I had seen your expanded kitchen post and couldn't find the exact tile. You have such a lovely kitchen, so warm and welcoming and the tile really makes a statement. I also see they only have one USA distributor. Your tile in your kitchen looks totally different than on the website..were you able to get a sample or see the tile in a store? I've sent Saltillo an email as well..so we shall see. If you have trouble visualizing what you'd like but "know it when you see it", then at this stage you should probably just look at as many stainless / dark cherry kitchens as you can and see which countertops and flooring "grab" you. In my case I knew I wanted simple, natural cherry cabinets and stainless appliances and probably a wood floor, but that was it. Looking at lots of pictures helped me narrow things down, so now I can at least have intelligent conversations with kitchen designers. I'd suggest going over to houzz.com and entering "stainless steel dark cherry kitchen" into their search box and looking through some of the hundreds of results you get. It's a great source of ideas. After you see some you like, you can probably come up with more words to add to the search box to narrow things down. You can also go to google and enter "site:gardenweb.com dark cherry stainless" and you'll find lots of threads on this site too. I don't know of a way to limit it to threads with photos, unfortunately. Laura

I would love to see how it turned out. We're doing a very similar renovation. So far our walls are alabaster and we've only purchased lower cabinets. I painted them Mindful Gray (BM). We just purchased our counter tops yesterday and they are unfinished butcher block. So now I'm panicking on what stain to use on them (our floors are Allen + Roth Russet Oak Laminate). I don't want the floors & counter tops to be too matchy and I'm considering just oiling them without staining. So many decisions!

I just saw this quartzite the other day at the stone yard. Looks like this is the same one. If you get this for the island, then do the perimeter as well. I think if you try and do something different, but still white, it's going to look off. (unless you do a plain white quartz) . Do a quartz that looks like marble, is not going to work, IMO. They are just two different looks. Do them all the same, or do a dark, solid contrast. Now, if you wanted to do a soapstone, I'd say fine. that would actually look nice. look at this pic to get an idea (different island, but same premise). it's not going to make things look dark if you went w/a soapstone or even a honed Jet Mist granite. Cielo is a quartzite that you may want to consider as well. this one is leathered.

With that size island you may have trouble getting jumbo size of quartz large enough. Jumbo granite slabs can be found. Might want to shorten island to 9’ if not too late.

^^We had to shorten our island to match the slab size. Ask questions to the fabricator regarding seams.

Here is the proposed layout for reference. Opening the west wall to flow into family room. East wall has windows so cannot put anything there. Photos of the space would not be helpful as it is a completely different setup and look currently.

What is going in the bay? I do agree you might need to shorten the island to make quartz choices a bit simpler and to avoid a seam.

Egan-I would reduce island length by around 12”. I would eliminate pony walls on ends and use decorative cabinet end panels and reduce 18” cabinet on far end to 12” cabinet. Make sure your cabinets are designed with proper metal support plates for slab. 12-13” overlay for stools is tight. I would expand to 16”. Most slabs can accommodate that total width. 36” deep plus 4” more would mean slab has to be 40-44” wide and 108-112” long. That is doable for most slabs without seams.
