Comments (27)Hope Shelayne is still hanging in there with us, and comes back to tell us how her house is doing after almost a year. Oh, ML, you are just too sweet! Thank you for thinking of me! The house is still standing--LOL. No, we have done a lot of work on it and are now working on the basement. I think I can say that the kitchen is finally finished. Well, there is the stairwell off the kitchen that needs to be finished. I suppose I need to post finished pics someday, as I did promise to do so. I need to find my camera, as my phone camera is just *pfffft*. I also need to post when it's clean, and right now, with the kids home from school and all the Christmas festivities, it is being used. A lot. And that is a good thing, really. I am truly blessed. :) A belated Merry Christmas to all, and to all a very happy new year!...See MoreAdvice on cabinet refacing?
Comments (25)I would try to fix the existing doors on your cabinets. I had an 80s kitchen with the melamine and oak cabinets. For my remodel, I tore out all the old cabinets and replaced them. But I save some of the original cabinets, and put them in the utility room behind the kitchen. I painted everything with something called "Grip and Seal Latex Stain Killer" by Coronado and then had trim board nailed on to the old cabinets (to mimic my new kitchen cabinets). Then I painted everything the same color as my new kitchen cabinets (Benjamin Moore Collector's Item) and used the same cup pulls and knobs as I did on the new cabinets. I'm really pleased with how everything came out. So pleased that sometimes I wonder why I didn't just leave the old cabinets in place and fix them up. Here are some pictures. Original kitchen cabinets: Redone cabinets: Just one thing. When the trim was added to the cabinets, they stuck out just a bit farther than the drawers (which were only painted). So I put a little block at the back of the drawers to make them flush with the cabinets. Hope this helps. Anne...See MoreKitchen cabinets refaced
Comments (12)Most businesses that offer refacing typically use a manufacturer to order doors that are prefinished at the factory. A factory finish is better in my opinion. So did you go through a cabinetmaker that ordered raw doors for you and finished them at his shop? What stain did you go with? light, medium or dark? natural or light maple can hide the blotchiniess better. Medium to espresso stains can really show blotchy without some kind of toner or special stain that is non-penetrating. This is what I've heard...my store doesn't finish cabinets. An opinion from a cabinet MAKER would be better for you if your guys actually did the finishing. If he ordered through a manufacturer and they came finished already from the factory, then a cabinet rep or dealer would be better. Hopefully your photos show well and you'll get some good advice here. So let us know: cabinetmaker finished locally? Or were doors prefinished at a factory? Big difference in what advice needs to be given....See Morelegend
