How do you search the forums efficiently?

I spend lots of time on the internet, and can generally find what I need. However, on houzz, I have a really hard time with the search function when I am looking for threads or posts on a certain topic. Frequently, ( I would say probably 85% of the time) the posts which come up are from several years ago, when I KNOW that there have been recent ones.

I tried looking at the FAQ and such, to no avail.

Is there somewhere that you can direct me to read up on this or offer some advice? I find it so frustrating when the most recent thread that the search pulls up was updated in 2014 or 2011 or even 2018 when I know it was discussed, using the search word, within the past weeks for example

I use google to search the site: ex.

site:gardenweb.com lou's pizzelles

Also, it is possible someone else will remember the post and be able to find it. So if all else fails, start a thread asking for help.

Two things that help me. First, if I know which forum I saw it on, when I go to the search bar at the top, I click on the forum when it adds it to my phrase/word. Second, once it pops up, I click on latest, rather default to relevant. May not help, but those are the things that get me where I want the fastest. Hope this helps!

It took me months to figure that out....I kept searching on the Garden web area, drove me nuts. I wanted to search for Tropical breeze pebble tec and I would get pages of posts for every tropical flower....I'm glad I wasnt the only one:)

Hi Melle - The member names that end with _gw are because the GW member name was already in use on Houzz. It could be the same member who might have an account already on Houzz or the name was already taken. The good news is that even if you can't claim your original name, you can still have it display on your posts by going into your profile settings (top right corner of the page - click on 'Your Houzz') and scroll down to 'Display Information'. Search can be found at the top of the page. Hi Maddie -- If you look towards the top of the page, just above the title of the post, you'll see a breadcrumb trail in green. If you click 'Home Decorating' it will bring up the list of posts in the forum.

There IS still a way to search just your individual forum! Somebody figured it out several days ago on RMG! Go to the search box on top and type in what you want to search for--a drop down menu will show up with several options for what you want to search. I'm not sure if it's always the first option (for me it has been), but look for the option that has your search words and (in this case) "vegetable gardening" after them, then click on that option and it will search only this forum. I just tried it with "carrots," and it worked! The drop down menu works on Firefox and on Safari IF you have Java enabled. Not sure about other browsers, but I assume it works in any of them as long as Java is enabled. Happy searching, Skybird - from Rocky Mountain Gardening!

I bookmark the ones I might want to find, in advance or if I started them-then I can go back to my profile or if I remember the name of the OP who started them-go to their profile otherwise..it's like been swallowed into abyss.. I started thinking that some new OPs ask question then never come back after twenty people answered them in the nicest way possible, simply because they can't find their own thread anymore.

Yes, Graywings has it right. The site's search function is useless, use Google or other members!

If you follow rob333's suggestion, you will almost always turn up what you are searching for. I do it all the time :-) Just search in the most appropriate forum

The search function here is not useless....you just gotta know the tricks -)

Thanks all. I HAVE done what rob333 suggested, and somehow when I select latest, I swear it then forgets what I am searching for and just brings up the latest posts on any and every forum. Honestly, I have also searched on google with those keywords as well- to no good end.

I appreciate the suggestions, and will try them all ((AGAIN)).

I do remember when the search function on this site used to work properly so I guess that adds to my frustration.

Each and every forum sounds like you didn't click the drop down when you originally search, maybe.

I seldom search on this forum. When I do, I use the Houzz search function, works well for me.

I use the search function for the exact forum I want to search in, usually works for me.
