I have tried to go to sites to find out how to grind down concrete, and have not had much luck. Is it difficult to grind it down, do you know? Except for this crack, we seem to be ok. THe crack is 57" long, and runs from wall to wall making a triangle with the two walls. The depth and the width of the crack are about 1/8". THat measurement may be acceptable, but it seems logical to me that I should attempt to deal with it before putting down the floor - that floor was expensive. I would appreciate any other information you might have as far as what exactly to do about it. Thanks, Sammy

Cork underlayment does not provide any effective moisture retarder properties, unless it has an attached moisture barrier film (and I am unaware of such a product). If your laminate has an attached underpad, you may void the product warranty by adding an additional cushioned layer. However, since most flooring warranties are very limited instruments, I doubt that would be a problem for you anyway.

floorguy, I brought this back up because I had the same question. My hubby is insistent we add something to the laminate we have that already has the underlayment attached. I spoke with an Armstrong tech support guy and he was emphatic, that not even cork would be acceptable to the terms of their warranty. My husband doesn't put much stock in warranties, anyway, so has it been your experience, where you could hear back, that the cork is dense enough to not 'give' any and cause the tongue and groove to deteriate? I am always concerned when a product has specifics to their warranty, because in my mind, why would they be so emphatically opposed to additional underlayments, even cork if there weren't good reasons. Why do they care?? The guy I spoke with said there is no laminate they make, that has the attached underlayment that will allow for additional underlayment beyond the moisture barrier! Disappointing because we had hoped to deaden the hollow sound a bit more, if possible!

I've recently fallen in love with a sample of Quick Step stone look laminate which looks like charcoal colored slate. Much to my surprise it looks like it will be just a gorgeous crowning touch in our bathroom redo. I was discussing it with my plumber and he said toilets don't do well on floating floors because the wax ring doesn't have a solid seat. Since our toilet is in a small closet-like alcove (with a door) I figured in there I'd put a porcelain tile that matches the Quick Step Quadra piece as closely as possible, to avoid this concern. Then today I got to thinking about it and wondered if we could just have the Quick Step installed (glued?) on top of a solid wood subfloor in that small area, and then have the toilet mounted on top and right through both the laminate and the solid wood underfloor. Now I know nothing about floors and even less about installing them, so this may be laughable. Can any of you floor experts lend your expertise here? (It's the black opal on the link I've included.)
