How far does the wall with the wainscot go?

You may need to remove the table and add shoe storage. IKEA has some options

Thank you for your response! That wall is 70”, I did just move the table out to another room temporarily. I checked out IKEA Henmes cabinet. It looks like we can fit one in the space which should be adequate. Now onto coat overflow issues. Thank you!

How many people live in this house? What does the inside of the closet look like?

What if you changed the doors to bi-fold that could be left open all the time, would that make people more likely to use the closet?

What is the cabinet on the right side of the bathroom? Is that washer/dryer/mop sink? I LOVE my PAX cabinets from IKEA. The height makes all the difference in terms of storage. I might also consider removing the doors on your closet. If you have easier access, it will be neater and not necessary to hide.

I have one deep PAX in my mudroom that has the cat box under and storage above and to the side for cleaning supplies, off-season boots, mittens, etc. During hockey season, my son uses those baskets to dry his gear.

(this is in a room with a closed door - if it was open, I would put things in baskets to make it neater. But you'd be surprised at all you can store when you are taking advantage of the full height.

I have a narrower one in the hallway (like where your drawer cabinet is) that holds current shoes, accessories (mittens/hats, etc in winter and then visor, sunglasses, sunscreen in summer).

Bigso bins from Container store fit perfectly in the shallow 39" cabinet.

I would put one like this where your low cabinet currently is then remove the closet doors, add a deep cabinet in the closet for what you need (maybe even the dog crate though not much ventilation then) and have double rods for hanging on the remaining half of the open closet.

4 ppl, 4 adults, myself, husband and 2 children who moved back home after college. Closet is full. I try to donate unused coats and jackets but these are what’s left. Closet opening is 48”. Only closet, I also use this to store vacuum and laundry drying rack. Shelves are for off season shoes and boots. Thank you!

You’re a patient mom if you let your adult children pile their stuff up like that.

i think the sliding doors make the space difficult to use. Either French doors or foldimg Beyond that, there’s limiting what’s stored in that closet vs. bedrooms. We live in in northern NY so we have multiple seasons of jackets, shoes, boots. Only the current season are stored in the front closet. I counted like 20+ hangers, not to mention what’s on the hooks. Can you limit everyone to like 4 jackets in the front?

If the hemnes cabinet can fit most of the shoes hopefully access to closet would be easier and a bifold might work. I was thinking of extending the top and bottom rod to fit more, while still having room for vacuum and boots. Thank you!

Yes, I agree that storing off season would be ideal. I’ve though about storing in basement but fear mildew odor when time to use. Bedroom closet space is very limited. I have small house...possibly I can use those vacuum sealed bags for off season. Thank you for your suggestions!

You could also change the arrangement in the closet so the hanger rack goes all the way across the top, then the shoe selves are below.

The vacuum bags work well, I use those for old blankets that we don’t use but “it’s a shame to get rid of them”.

Will everyone use the Hemnes shoe storage? We never used the shoe cubby unit we used to have. We are 3-4 adults, and have 3 boot trays (and we put a wire shelf inside each, it does a better job of getting water and debris off the shoes). Easy to kick shoes off onto the boot tray, and if we run out of space we stack the shoes on top. It may not be as pretty as cute cubbies, but we use it, the shoes are corralled, and no one is tripping over each other’s shoes.

So, you could have that along the long wall, with all hooks up above. We have 12 hooks! Especially during spring And fall, it’s nice to have handy the different kinds of jackets you need from day to day. (On another short wall are four hooks for my purse and shopping bags.

Thank you for the boot rack suggestion. We use this room for multiple purposes, so I like to hide the shoes and coats as much as possible. I'll be posting pics of finished room soon. Thanks!

I love my Hemnes shoe cabinet. It keeps the shoes of 2 people; you’ll want 2 of them. Our everyday shoes are kept out, under a bench.
