Bosch DW gives off funny smell after several days of non-use....
Comments (149)I have a Bosch 800 series with Crystal Dry, same odor problem others are experiencing. This dishwasher replaced a 30+ year old Whirlpool that never smelled, ever. I rinse dishes first because I run the dw once every 6 days or so. Did a thorough cleaning of the filter, below the filter, the walls etc. Used Cascade dw cleaner this weekend, which did a super job of cleaning, but as far as the odor issue, it's back, now with an overlay of the strongly perfumed Cascade cleaner, which makes it worse because when I open the dw door to air it out, my kitchen smells like the dw cleaner, which I don't really care for. As far as the residual water, Bosch CS told me that it was an intentional part of the design, to prime the pump for the next use? However, I'm wondering if it's the crystals causing the issue, by absorbing odors and then releasing them after several days into the dishwasher? Thoughts? Very frustrated, because dishwashers are nothing new - the first one was invented in 1850 according to the internet. Would much rather have one that just cleans the dishes, than one with all the bells and whistles that smells....See MoreFireplace makes indoors smell like Campground...HELP!
Comments (3)We've had problems this year, during warm humid days only. The cheminy had been cleaned, There is a "open" insert into the fireplace the damper has been removed. If the insert were true air-tight that wouldn't (and hand not in the past) mattered, as it blocks air-flow. I tried sprays, and baking soda in the fire box, still it smelled bad on humid days (not on hot humid days as the airconditioning seemed to prevent back flow of air from the flue. Finally I put a small electric heater in the firebox, set to come on about 1/4th of the time. This made the lower chamber warmer than outside and any air-flow was up, not down the cheminy. We're thinking about a new true air-tight with a stainless steel flue liner. I will at minimum remover the insert this spring and put the damper back in....See MoreSmoke Smell in My House (Where There's Smoke, There's Fire!)
Comments (18)The recurring theme here is that people call the non-emergency line and then are surprised when the fire department shows up with all their trucks anyway. But there is a good reason for this: People are frequently embarrassed to call the fire department and tend to minimize the problem when reporting it ("Oh, it's just a small fire on my stove that I can't quite get to go out; no real problem other than I can't breath right now"). By the time the fire truck rolls in a few minutes later, it turns out this was in fact a real problem and needed all the gear and tools that the firefighters have access to on their trucks. If the caller only reports the smell of smoke, it's quite possible there is nothing much to worry about. There also is the possibility that the moment somebody investigates and opens the door to where the fire has been smoldering for hours, air rushes in an a major fire starts within seconds. At that point, you really don't want to wait another 10 minutes for the trucks to roll in. You need them right then and there. I don't know about all jurisdictions. But in most cases that I am familiar with, the fire department will happily come out to you and investigate, even if it turns out to be "nothing". And you shouldn't get charged for it. But there always could be exceptions. Also, if they subsequently call an ambulance, that's when you might see charges....See MoreNegative pressure? Chimney smoke smell.
Comments (2)You've been in the house for a year. How long do you plan to stay? If the answer is a long while, get an energy rater in the house to identify the low-hanging fruit for you to save energy costs. They can probably pin down your problem at the same time. Check into local utility or state programs that might defer the costs of the evaluation and improvements....See MoreOlychick
